I7 6700 Temperature

Hi,

I have a I7 6700 and I'm worried about its temperature. When I'm playing games, the temperature goes to 75º/76º Celsius, is it normal?

Thank you.

It appears that many other people are having the same problems. I also have an i7 6700k with the same problems. Intel will not admit there's a fault.

Think about it: if Intel would replace these faulty processors free of charge (even if you've lost the purchase receipt and/or packaging), this would give Intel GOOD publicity and buyer confidence.

In the meantime, you could slightly under-clock the processor (I've done this) to keep the temps down.

Hi Amy,

Follow the tests below. I'm was playing Battlefield 1 and Mafia 3. In both cases the temperature achieved more than 75ºC.

Thank you.

Thank you very much for the information.

/thread/112484 Pessoa, your report looks healthy.

Please try the following suggestions;

  • Remove your graphics card, and run the games with the integrated Intel® HD Graphics 530.
  • Try fitting one memory stick at a time.
  • Update your BIOS to the latest version. Version 1.B seems to add several enhancements, find it here; https://www.msi.com/Motherboard/support/B150M-PRO-VD.html# down-bios Support For B150M PRO-VD | Motherboard - The world leader in motherboard design | MSI Global.

Please let me know how it goes.

Hi Amy,

I'm already using the latest bios and tested with one memory stick, however to test the processor with its onboard video card sounds strange for me. I bought an i7 because I would like to use high end video cards, and this processor is supposed to support them. I would like to mention that I received this processor last week from Intel as a warrant because my last processor stopped working, and it had the same problem. On idle the temperatures are very normal, but under load no. I don't know, but if you can provide me another solution I would appreciate that.

Thank you.

Sure, I understand. My intention with removing the graphics card is to rule out a possibility that it is adding to the temperature increment, this was merely a suggestion. If the processor behaves within the specs using the Intel® HD Graphics 530 this might be related to the card.

Gaming is a CPU intensive task meaning that it will add workload to the processor specially is you are using a external graphics, this why the temperatures on idle are different.

One more thing I would like to add is that your processor is running 4°C to 5°C above the TCASE when you are gaming, and from our experience with similar cases the behavior is expected; however, if you think the processor is overheating you can always replace the processor.

Regards,

Amy.

/thread/112484 Pessoa, thank you very much for trying my suggestion.

I would like to check something regarding you report; which of the columns are you referring to as the high CPU temperature? The Value, Min or Max column? I would like to double check that because according to those results the Value is what you are actually getting, the Min is the minimum that it can get and the Max is the maximum that your processor can reach.

One more thing I would like to know is; was screenshot taken while gaming?

Amy.

Hi Amy,

No problem, I tried to simulate as much as I could, but as this game is so demanding for Intel GC, it was basically unplayable.

I'm referring to the column max, which is the temperatures that my processor is getting. It keeps between 66 to 72 when I'm playing. I tried to take the last picture while playing, however when I used ALT+TAB the temperature reduced. I don't know if it's normal to reach this kind of temperature, I'm just afraid because my last processor broke in 6 months and it was reaching the same temperatures.

Thank you.

/thread/112484 Pessoa, the thing about this tool is that Intel has not officially validated it for this purpose, so there is no documentation regarding the measurements taken by it. Due to this fact, and since this is a third-party tool it is difficult to comment on the accuracy of the results. However, I have been investigating about this tool, CPUID Hardware Monitor, in order to help you, and I found out that the Value column shows the current value of the processor. This means that you should be focusing on that column when running the games instead of Max column. The Max column is just for reference for the maximum parameters that your processor could reach, it does not indicate the temperature when the computer is running.

Now, based on what I mentioned before; your temperatures are;

Value

Core # 0 60 °C

Core # 1 59 °C

Core # 2 63 °C

Core # 3 52 °C

Package 64 °C

The maximum TCASE for your processor is 71°C, this means that any number below this temperature is completely fine. And, like mentioned before gaming will take the processor to higher temperatures, so it seems like your computer is behaving as expected. Here you can check the TCASE; http://ark.intel.com/products/88196/Intel-Core-i7-6700-Processor-8M-Cache-up-to-4_00-GHz

Over here; https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NThWE7P-U1w Tutorial: HW Monitor Tutorial - YouTube, there is brief description of each column.

Hope it helps.

Amy.

Hi Amy,

Thank you for your support. Just an observation, the Max temp showed on this software is the max temp that the processor achieved, not the max it could achieve. The picture below shows it:

Thanks for the observation.

Hope that my previous input brought clarification regarding your temperature concern. If you still think that the processor is overheating or not operating as expected, you can always replace the processor.

Amy.

Hi Amy,

Thank you for your help. I just reduced the turbo boost to 3.7. The broken processor that I sent to Intel had the same issue. I believe I need to buy a better fan because the one that comes with the processor is not supporting it.

It's expensive to send the processor to change again.

Thank you.

Sure /thread/112484 Pessoa, you're welcome.

As a recommendation you can consider a water solution, I personally have seen cases were it actually makes the difference although your reports seemed fine.

Hi Amy,

Thank you for contacting me. Since I reduced the turbo boost, it works fine for me. I'll leave it like that until I buy a new cooler system.

Thank you and have a good day.
