Intel Rapid Storage Technology - Cannot expand array

    Dionisis

      Hello all,
i have a Gigabyte GA-Z97M-D3H motherboard with Z97M chipset. The system has 4 HDD raid 5 setup. One array, 2 disk partitions. What i want to do, if it is possible, is to expand this array with one more (5th) disk. The thing is, that the "Expand Array" option under the Manage Array is nowhere to be found. All 5 disks are the same size and same model.
      Please Check screen shot.

The Version of the RST driver/gui is 13.6.2.1001 and its the latest in the Gigabyte site.
Any suggestions are more than welcome.

      Thank you in advance,

      Dionisis.

          Hello Dionisis,

Thank you for contacting the Intel community.

Yes, you can do that, before doing so, please update the IRST to the version 14.8.0.1042, once you update the IRST follow the steps from the picture attached.

We always recommend backing any important information on your system before making any changes in a RAID.

          I hope this can help.

          Regards,

          Ivan.

Hello Ivan and thank you for your support.
I've updated the driver to the version 14.8.0.1042 as suggested, but still i don't get any Expand Array option. Keep in mind that the UI is still the 13.6.2.1001 version. Only the driver has changed.
The instructions mentioned something about disk space, so i have attached a screenshot of the free disk space.

            Best Regards,
            Dionisis.

              Hello Dionisis,

Make sure you click one of the raid 5 volumes where you want to add the HDD and not the whole array, once you do that you should get the expand option.

Please let me know how it goes.

              Ivan.

Thanks for the response; being that the case, to investigate please attach a picture of Disk Management where it shows all the partitions and HDDs installed and the Intel® Rapid Storage Technology report.

Good morning Ivan, thank you for your support.
Disks 2,3,4 and 5 are all USB connected disks. Only 0,1 and 6 are internal and again, only 0 and 1 are part of the array. No6 is the wannabe

                        Hello Dionisis,

After sharing this information with my colleagues and to further investigate it we find out that this is not possible with this raid configuration.

I really apologize if I made you waste your time trying the suggestions I provided but unfortunately now we know that this is not possible.

                        http://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/support/boards-and-kits/000006407.html
Adding an additional hard drive to a RAID array in order to increase the capacity is known as array expansion. One example of array expansion would be adding a fourth hard drive to a three-drive RAID 5 volume.

Intel® Rapid Storage Technology supports array expansion on platforms with the Intel® ICH10DO or Intel® PCH RAID controller hubs.

                        Best regards,
