Resolutions issues with Intel HD Graphics 530 / i7-6700k

Hi Esteban,

There is a problem with custom resolutions, not only in Fallout4 but in many other games I think.

If I create a lower custom resolution in Intel control panel, when I run the game, instead of going to that resolution that I set, the driver auto scales the resolution, to the monitor maximum resolution, instead of setting that resolution and letting the monitor to do the scaling. This is causing the igpu to be loaded with useless work and is causing lag.

This was tested with the latest beta driver 4539.

Have a nice day!

One of the games is Fallout 4. You don't even need to create custom resolution, it's enough to set lower resolution then your monitor and the resolution stayes the same as maximum monitor resolution.

In Allods online I have a custom resolution 1456x960 and each time I reinstall driver (clean install), I have to set in Control Panel / Display , Scale to full screen then set it to Maintain Display Scaling. Sometimes I have to change resolution in game to another resolution and go back. Also in this game I get randomly some horizontal flash bands for fraction of second. Is not so disturbing because the periodicity is very big.

I just tested GTA 5, and it is a very big problem with resolution settings. For example I created a custom resolution 1280x800 76Hz, and when I set that resolution the driver is setting resolution to 1024x768 76 Hz ..

When I set resolution to 1280x800 59 Hz, the driver is setting resolution to 1680x1050 60 Hz ...

I think it is a complete mess in driver at resolution calculation.

Hi Esteban,

I tested with some old Ati and Nvidia cards.

Ati card is behaving exactly like Intel.

On Nvidia instead it always give me the option "Use my display's built-in scaling" . On Ati I don't even have that option, and on Intel that option is "Maintain Display Scaling", which, on other resolutions that probably the monitor reports them, is missing. For example that option is missing on 1280x800 and my monitor supports that resolution as it is a 16:10 ratio ...

Is there a registry tweak to activate that option no matter what resolution is set? On Nvidia I could set custom resolutions, just respecting the aspect ratio, and monitor was working with them.

I don't need to update anything everything is with last updates, bios drivers and all. everything is about drivers and options not available.

I don't even want to test with older drivers then 4380, unless you want me to start report again "Display driver stopped responding", and Internet explorer freeze on some pages, which one of your colleague, Allan, got them fixed.

PS:The only resolutions on which the driver shows "Maintain Display Scaling" are 1024x768, 1280x960, 1280x1024, 1440x900, 1680x1050( some of those resolutions are not even 16:10 ...). The name should be "Use Display Scaling" and it should give the option to activate it on any resolution. I think that is the problem with people reporting that on some capture card is not working at the resolution they set, because the driver is doing conversion and there is no option to use monitor scaling, in that case being the capture card.

Here you go: the SSU report.

And I don't know from where it reads the CPU voltage 1,7V ...lol

I don't have any voltage close to 1,7V.

That driver you gave me link is not for skylake

I don't know which version you want me to test, but any older version prior 4380 has problems with IE browser page size and some pages will just freeze or have Display driver crash error.

Well I hope this helps.

I will still run on igpu till I see how the vega 10 cards behave, because I am not so convinced on nvidia gtx 10xx cards, especially after the evga fiasco, even after the so called "fix" the temperatures on VRM's are a little bit to high for my taste (80 C). I can't imagine what will happen if the fans on that cards fail.

Atm the only video card I can think of buying is Asus strix, but I will decide when I will see some tests with vega 10

Anyway thank you and

Have a nice week too !

Ok, in allods I'm already dizzy with the resolution bug, I set custom resolution 1456x960 76 Hz and first time it went 1680x1050, then I started play with the driver settings in control panel with resolution 1456x960 for the monitor changed "Maintain Display Ratio", "Maintain Aspect Ratio", "Scale Full screen" and nothing was working.

Restarted PC again same resolution in game then I played again with those and I got instead of 1456x960 - 1280x960, after a lot of pain switching those settings and I still don't understand what was the setting that triggered the resolution change, because now no matter what I change in control panel the resolution stays the same.

I tried another resolution 1456x910 which is exactly the 16:10 scaling of monitor resolution, and instead again after playing with those switches and restart the monitor turned into 1152x900.

I don't know but it is a bug there and the resolution calculation and activation and all those switches in control panel are not working as they should.

Hello Ronin ,

After a while, I was able to setup the lab and perform tests with the nearest configuration available from my end.

Here you can find the results and some screenshots.

Steps followed:

1. Installed Windows 8.1 Pro 64-bit

2. Installed required drivers (LAN)

3. Installed graphics drivers 4552

4. Started the game

Settings used in the game:

Resolution 1456x960

Graphics settings, default selected by the game (all of them added in the screenshots attached)

Then I played the game for a while, got no "black bars" then I restarted the game, closed, and opened and the resolution was still there.

*This is while using windowed option, fullscreen reflects no mouse cursor

*The desktop resolution was set to 1456x960 @60Hz (custom resolution) and native res as well 1920x1080 @60Hz

*Non of the settings reflected the issue mentioned (resolution within the game changes)

I am truly sorry for the delayed answer, if there is something I missed, please let me know to proceed accordingly.

Hi Esteban,

Is not the resolution in game that is wrong. Is what resolution the monitor reports. Here the resolution is 1456x960 and I made a ss not so good quality though.

My monitor is not 1920x1080, is 1680x1050. 1680x1050 is 16:10

If I set it on 1280x800 that is exact 16:10 and it's supported by the monitor by default, in game, the monitor reports that the resolution set by the driver is 1680x1050, and on windows desktop if I set it to that resolution the monitor reports resolution 1024x768 ...

Also no matter what resolution I set in Fallout 4, monitor reports that resolution is always 1680x1050.

I made a custom resolution 1152x768, I can see it in Fallout 4 when I select resolution in settings but if I want to set the desktop in windows at the resolution, I can't see it in Intel display Control Panel. I can see it in windows display resolution panel ...

The main thing is that when I set 1280x800 my monitor reports that is not that resolution.

There may be a problem with 16:10 monitor types or resolutions in driver.

I think that this is on of your last work days this year so

Happy New Year!

Hello Ronin ,

I did the following:

1. Set 1680x1050 within windows (we don't have 16:10 monitors in our labs as of now)

2. Started the game and set 1280x800 Windowed, the resolution was properly recognized by the monitor, 1280x800 (Screenshot)

3. Then I changed to fullscreen and noticed that the resolution displayed by the monitor was its native resolution

One thing I noticed is that if I am in-game, then go to Windows, the resolution recognized by the monitor changes from native to resolution selected in the control panel.

Please let me know if this is what you are experiencing, as of now, I believe this is expected but odd, for that reason I will be further investigating if this is the norm.

Any additional things that I missed, please let me know.

Windowed, with resolution from windows recognized properly

Resolution configured within windows

Resolution recognized by the monitor while using full screen

Hi Esteban,

From what I see when the resolution was set to 1280x800 the monitor recognized 3840x2160, instead of 1280x800. That means the driver is doing a rescaling.

If you set the resolution to 1280x800 the monitor should recognize 1280x800 without any rescaling. I think that's normal.

In Frameless window it goes to 1680x1050 also.

I tryed to change in game the resolution to 1366x768 (that's resolution for HD ready TV) and it changed to 1680x1080 ...

Is not only in this game. In Fallout 4 as I told you before the problem is the same ...

Try set in windows 1280x800 and see if it is recognized there, which I doubt.

I think that the igpu is doing some useless work with this rescaling.

Hello Ronin ,

I performed some additional tests, with a driver that was designed to "override" the EDID (it can be interpreted as the ID of the monitor that provides all required information about compatibility and specs), allowing the monitor to use different resolutions from the ones that it supports.

Now, I was able to get 1680x1050 (not native resolution/resolution set in the control panel) while using the frameless window

I was not able to get 1680x1050 while using full-screen mode within the game

The resolution was properly recognized while using windowed mode.

This is the driver used: https://downloadcenter.intel.com/download/26504/Intel-Graphics-Test-Driver https://downloadcenter.intel.com/download/26504/Intel-Graphics-Test-Driver

Additionally, I would like to request the graphics report from your system, this will provide me with the EDID of the monitor you have, so I can double check which are the resolutions supported by the monitor itself, which may be the issue we are facing here (only supported resolutions would work/be reflected regularly with the monitor)

Here is how you can get the graphics report from the control panel: http://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/support/graphics-drivers/000005848.html http://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/support/graphics-drivers/000005848.html

**Tests so far have been performed with Allods Online.

Hope I can hear from you.

Hi Esteban,

I attached the EDID report.

In the EDID information it seems that there is not 1280x800 resolution.

But there are closer resolutions to 1280x800 like 1440x900 and instead is put to 1680x1050 ...

Also in Intel Display Control Panel the resolution shown in EDID info 1280x720 is missing and even if I add it manually is not showing there.

If I try to add 1366x768 76Hz it adds 1368x768 76Hz.

There are some bugs there in resolution adding and calculation.

Also I think that it will be a good option to save scaling settings for every resolution, because if u are in a higher resolution and start a game that goes at a lower resolution the game starts with the scaling set to Maintain Aspect Ratio.

Also I noticed that if I change resolution in game to 1280x960 in full screen mode, instead of that resolution is still 1680x1050.

I don't understand whats wrong with the resolution scaling settings but is strange.
