1. Re: Boot the intel compute stick from an usb-stick ?
Jan 16, 2017 10:45 AM (in response to MWoerlee)This message was posted on behalf of Intel CorporationHello MWoerlee:
In regard to your question, yes, you can always try a BIOs update using a USB flash drive.
On the following link you will find the instruction of how to do that, it is called the F7 method:
http://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/support/boards-and-kits/desktop-boards/000005724.html
Also, here is the file needed to do the update, version 0034 latest:

Any questions, please let me know.

2. Re: Boot the intel compute stick from an usb-stick ?
MWoerlee Jan 16, 2017 1:26 PM (in response to Intel Corporation)I know how to update the bios and have done that several times but that's not my problem.
I want to use an image copy of disk C: made by the backup program Macrium Reflect (in case of problems)
This program uses an bootable USB as startup but in that case the boot tpriority in the bios has to be set to first USB and after that disk C:
In the boot menue of the STCK1A32WFC I can not find the priority settings - perhaps the do not exist.
That's my question. A Google search and a search in this forum had no result.

3. Re: Boot the intel compute stick from an usb-stick ?
Jan 17, 2017 11:35 AM (in response to MWoerlee)This message was posted on behalf of Intel CorporationHello MWoerlee:
Let me apologize if I misunderstood your question.
In order for the stick to be able to boot from a USB stick as you mentioned an option on the BIOS is needed to enable that or to activate that, in this case that option is not available and the stick will only recognize the internal chip where the OS is installed or the SD card as boot devices, a USB stick will not show as an option to boot from.
Any questions, please let me know.

4. Re: Boot the intel compute stick from an usb-stick ?
MWoerlee Jan 17, 2017 12:27 PM (in response to Intel Corporation)Dear Alberto,
It is rather confusing
because I received from Germán, Intel Customer Support the message below:Who will I believe?
Regards,
Maarten
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Dear Mr.
In order to solve your
problem, please update to the latest BIOS 0034 if you haven't done so:https://downloadcenter.intel.com/download/26502/BIOS-Update-FCBYT10H-86A-?product=86612
Once you have done it, you
should be able to boot into a USB by doing the following:Once you are in the BIOS
please enable USB boot, then set the Boot Drive Order to the one you want. Please note that the only
OS supported are 10 and 8.1http://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/support/boards-and-kits/intel-compute-stick/000005899.html
Lastly, please check if
when pressing F10 and manually the USB is recognised. The USB needs to be
recognised as bootable if you want to add an entry in the boot menu. Please let us know if this
solves your query.Best regards,
Germán

5. Re: Boot the intel compute stick from an usb-stick ?
Jan 17, 2017 1:49 PM (in response to MWoerlee)This message was posted on behalf of Intel CorporationHello MWoerlee:
In regard to your inquiry, yes, those will be the steps that we provide when you need to install the operating system on the stick, some sticks came without the OS pre-installed and in those cases those will be the instructions to install it, by using the F10 menu.
Also, as it was mentioned above you will be able to set up the boot priority on the BIOS under the tab USB boot and then USB boot driver order.
But the thing about this scenario is that since the information that you are going to use is an image copy of disk C: made by the backup program Macrium Reflect, we cannot guarantee that it will work as expected since a 3rd party program is involved and the stick and the F10 option was tested by Intel only for OS installation.
Let me apologize for any inconvenience.
Any further questions about this matter, please let me know.

6. Re: Boot the intel compute stick from an usb-stick ?
MWoerlee Jan 17, 2017 5:41 PM (in response to Intel Corporation)Dear Alberto,
Thanks for your answer.
After inspecting the boot (F2) of the compute stick I tried the F10 procedure and this works.
So the stick booted from a USB stick with Macrium Reflect software.
But I did not restore the images of the C:\ partitions. At a crash I will do that.
I realize you give no guarantee but till now the Reflect software never has disappointed me.
I am satisfied so for me this case can be closed.

Maarten
