I would love to help you with this.
It seems that you are a little confused with it, there isn't additional steps to run the blink example. I think the first step that you have to do is update the MRAA and UPM libraries (https://software.intel.com/en-us/node/705853) and then follow the step of the example: https://software.intel.com/en-us/blinking-an-led-using-c-with-intel-system-studio-iot-edition.
Those additional steps that you gave us are not necessary unless you want to use Microsoft Azure IoT Hub or IBM Bluemix IoT, for more information about these clouds check this site: https://software.intel.com/en-us/iot/hardware/edison#cloud
I hope you find this information useful.
Have a nice day!
Ok. Yes, I see what you mean. Those additional things are not needed.
However, when I try to update the MRAA and UPM libraries as is suggested in the link you provided, Intel® IoT > Packages Update for Selected Project is blocked out and unable to be selected. My guess this is because I don't have any projects open. But again, I can't create a project because I keep getting this error that I mentioned before.
I have also tried to use Intel® IoT > Manage installed development platforms in order to manually install the platforms, but I get a list of devices. And the checkboxes won't let me select the Intel Edison! It states that the platform is not installed, but it doesn't give me the option to install it.
I have even manually installed MRAA from the github page, but this hasn't changed anything.
Please advise me on what I should do. This has amounted to a very frustrating experience. The Intel Edison guide walks you through setting up the board and tells you to install an IDE, but once you do that, there is literally no direction on what to do next.
That would frustrate me, too.
I'm not sure why you can't create projects with your Edison, personally I recommend you to install Intel System Studio again following the next guide: https://software.intel.com/en-us/node/705841 (You can ignore the step 4 of running the IDE, including the box).
If it works, you will be able to create projects, you have to update MRAA and UPM in your Edison (https://github.com/intel-iot-devkit/mraa) and Intel System Studio (https://software.intel.com/en-us/node/705853).
I hope this works.
