The Intel® Centrino® Ultimate-N 6300 may work with Windows® 10, but it is not fully supported. The last operating system this wireless adapter was able to receive drivers for was Windows* 8.1.

This means that we have a few possible scenarios:
1. Adapter functions using the Windows* 8.1 drivers.
2. Adapter works after uninstalling all drivers, using the inbox drivers provided by Microsoft*.
3. Adapter works, but performs poorly regardless of driver.
4. Adapter will not function properly.
However since the adapter does not fully support Windows® 10, we can only make recommendations, we cannot guarantee it will work.
As per the thread you've linked:
"The driver version, 220.127.116.11, is the latest (newest) driver available for the Intel® Centrino® Ultimate-N 6300. That driver version is intended for Windows* 8.1. This driver version may or may not work with Windows® 10 on your particular computer. We advise you to check with the Computer Manufacturer Support of your particular system to see which driver version they recommend using with Windows® 10.
It is really up to the OEM to determine what the best driver would be (if any) for Windows® 10 for each system (make & model)."

As far as the driver installation goes, in these cases we don't usually recommend simply installing or updating the driver, but rather to perform a clean installation:
- Download and save the drivers to a known location on your hard drive.
- Uninstall PROSet. When prompted, choose the option to "Discard settings".
- Uninstall Wireless Driver from Device Manager. Make sure you mark the option to "Delete the driver software for this device" if prompted.
- Remove temporary files: Press the Windows* Key + R to open the run box. Type Cleanmgr.exe. Press OK. Select the main drive, usually "C:\". Check Temporary Files and uncheck everything else. Press OK.
- Install the latest Intel® Wireless driver. During the first steps of PROSet/Wireless installation, make sure to customize the installation and install all driver components.
- If you're choosing to try the Inbox drivers instead, go to Device Manager and locate the "Intel(R) Centrino(R) Ultimate-N 6300" under "Network Adapters". Right click and choose to "Update Driver Software". You may need to be connected to the internet via wired/LAN if performing this step.
That's odd to see. Yes, I would definitely recommend to remove both, which by itself may actually help quite a bit.
If you're unable to uninstall the old PROSet using the built-in uninstaller through Programs and Features, there are alternate ways to remove stubborn applications.
Ideally, you should be able to accomplish this using the Microsoft* Install/Uninstall Troubleshooter:
If not, you may need to use a third party uninstaller app (like GeekUninstaller*, or Revo Uninstaller Freeware*) to perform a forced uninstall.

I was able to uninstall the older app with the MS troubleshooter. Thank you for that. I performed the driver clean installs using both the Intel and Lenovo driver files. No joy on either. I still have to manually start the adapter in device manager. I'll try the inbox drivers next when I can plug into a cat5. Again, thanks for the help.

If the inbox driver does not work, you may need to return to your previous Windows* version, or consider an USB wireless adapter.
- Going back to Windows* 7 or Windows* 8.1.
I have not tried the inbox driver yet because I worry in might effect my other Intel devices. I think the incompatibility has something to do with power management. If I unplug the power cord from the laptop a few minutes before shut down (fast start up off), the next power up starts the adapter. If I unplug it right before shut down, next power up does not start the adapter.
Power management wise, there are three settings you will be able to toggle in Windows® 10:
- Device Manager: Right click on your wireless adapter and choose properties. Switch to the Power Management Tab, toggle the option to "Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power".
- Power Options: Change Plan Settings > Change advanced power settings > Wireless Adapter Settings > Power Saving Mode > Set both to "Maximum Performance".
- System Settings: Back in Power Options, from the left hand panel, "Choose what the power buttons do" > Scroll down and unselect "Turn on fast startup".
There may also be a "fast boot" option in your BIOS, but you would need to contact the manufacturer of your system for specific BIOS instructions.
All these settings affect your wireless adapter. It's possible that your system may be putting the adapter to sleep to save power, then since it's not fully compatible, it may be unable to wake it back up.
I previously had all the Win10 settings configured like you wrote.
I changed some of the bios settings and it now works after shutdown with pwr on. Now the adapter does not start on machine restart. I thought I had the shut down configured to go completely off like a restart does. Guess not. Also with pwr disconnected, normal start up on battery does not start the adapter. Have the opposite problem from my original problem but much easier to live with. Not sure which bios settings change made it work. Will play with that with some more.
