Wrong Dedicated Video Memory and Various BSOD

    PJay

I have strange problem with Intel HD Graphics (Haswell) Intel G1840, Asus H81M-V3 BIOS v2007, Windows 7 x64 UEFI SP1

Using the latest driver (v15.36.31.4414), Windows reports wrong Dedicated Video Memory. For example, I have set 256MB in BIOS but Windows reports 384MB

And If I set 128MB in BIOS, Windows won't boot at all or using 64MB, I'll get various BSODs e.g. System Service Exception, PFN LIST CORRUPT, Memory Management

Using 192MB in BIOS, I got no problem, just wrong amount of Dedicated Video Memory:

          Hello PJay:

Since you are using the latest version of the Intel graphics driver, we can try now the driver provided by ASUS, on the following link you will see it, look for the VGA driver:

          https://www.asus.com/Motherboards/H81MV3/HelpDesk_Download/

We recommend to set the BIOS to defaults, and if you do that the value that should appear in there should be 128MB, which is what windows needs in order to boot.

The actual amount of maximum graphics memory on your computer, depend on your computer model's specific configuration. Configuration factors may include:

The graphics memory allocation method set by your computer manufacturer.
          Amount of system memory available.
          Amount of pre-allocated memory.
          Operating system.

The dedicated video memory is dynamic, that means it adjusts to the program or application that Windows is running, but in this case since the BIOS has the option for you to choose the amount of dedicated video memory, then the best thing to do will be to get in contact with ASUS directly in order to check with them the possible scenarios that might happen if you change that value, and also to verify if the value of memory showing in the graphics properties is expected or not, you can always check on this by getting in contact with Microsoft as well.

Thanks for reply. Just tried MemTest86 and noticed that the problem was because of RAM sticks.

I changed them and working fine now.

But the Dedicated Video Memory is still wrong from what i have set in BIOS

              Hello PJay:

Thank you very much for letting us know that information.

Yes, that might be expected because all of the reason provided on the previous post, however to get further details you can always check on this matter with ASUS or Microsoft directly.

Excellent, it is great to hear that you were able to replace the RAM sticks and the PC is working fine now.

It doesn't relate to Asus or Microsoft. Intel's driver reports it incorrectly.

In this case then we will try to replicate the issue, in order to verify if the same scenario occurs.

As soon as I get the results I will post all the information on this thread.

Any questions, please let me know.

                    Hello PJay:

I just wanted to let you know that got the results of the investigation done on this matter.

I try to use the closest PC configuration in regards to the system you are using, some products are different:

                    Board: DH87MC
                    Processor: i5-4570s

The chipset you have is H81M and the one on our board is H87, which is very similar.

Attached to this thread you will see the document with the results from the lab, which basically are the same as before, meaning that value for the dedicated video memory comes from a combination of the BIOS and the operating system, Windows reads the dedicated video memory from the BIOS, so the problem is either Windows not reading that value properly or the BIOS not reporting the value as it should.

Since you already installed the latest BIOS version, then to check with Microsoft or ASUS about this matter will be the best thing to do.

Any questions, please let me know.

                    Alberto

Thanks for the reply. I'll create a support ticket for Asus to report this problem and will let you know here soon
