    core i7-6700k running at 93C at 100%

      Hello,

I was building two computers with core i7-6700k on gigabyte z170x gaming 3 and Cooler Master 212X.

Processors are not overclocked but are behaving very differently regarding temperature.

The hot running one was first installed. I have tested it with Intel Extreme Tuning Utility and it would go to 93 degrees. I wasn't happy so I removed the cooler and the processor. Using the same motherboard I've used the second processor with the same cooler and that one is running at 70 degrees at 100%.

So I have cleaned the first processor and the cooler and installed them in the second motherboard. Again it is running hot. IPDT says test passed but the processor is running up to 6 degrees below max.

I am not happy with this result. Do I have a defective processor ? Are they tested for heating in factory ?

      Thanks

          Hello snakepx:

In regard to your question, yes the processor was tested for heating in factory, but there are always some defective units that might not work properly.

When the processor passed the test on the IPDT, it usually means that is working fine, however, if you use the XTU and it was showing 93°C, then that temperature is really risky.

The fact that that you tested the board with a different processor, and the temperature was not that high, it means that the first processor might be defective.

That other processor that you tested there, is also i7-6700K?

What was the temperature value that you got from IPDT?

Is the PC getting freeze or throttling?

Did the PC go off by itself?

All of the above are symptoms of overheating, that is why we wanted to check on that.

Remember that the processor has 3 years of warranty, so, you can check with the place of purchase to verify if they can replace it, or we can always do that for you.

If you are interested in the replacement, please get in contact directly with us through chat, email, phone or online support, you just need to select processor on product type and you will get those options:

Thank you for answering. The story goes that two of us wanted to upgrade our computers to be able to play Civ 6 smoothly. It requires a 4th gen processor.

We have decided not to save money and have gotten the same setup - core i7 6700K, gigabyte z170x gaming 3, Cooler Master 212X and 16GB DDR4 from Kingston.

So the answer to your question is that both processors in question are the same - but his is running at 60C (I mistyped earlier).

After further testing I did heat up mine to 100C and thermal throttling kicked in. These were the tests I made:

            1. XTU stress test 5minutes - up to 93C no throttling

            2. IPDT 1 run - goes up to 6 degrees below max

            3. IPDT looping - fails test on second run

            4. CPU-Z stress CPU and monitoring with XTU - temperature throttling

As for problems - these are BSOD with an unspecified hardware error, BSOD with some interrupt problem, or a total freeze.

Anyway a sure way to provoke a freeze iz to run Civ 6 for about half an hour.

I have contacted a web shop where I bought the processors. They are giving me problems with replacement.

Is there a way to make a replacement through a local business partner in Croatia ? (The web shop in located in Hungary).

What are my options within EU for replacement as an end user ?

            Thank you
