In order to connect your board to a specific network without using configure_edison --wifi, you can follow the next steps:
ifconfig wlan0 down
#THE FOLLOWING IS JUST ONE COMMAND
cat << EOF > /etc/wpa_supplicant/wpa_supplicant.conf
config_methods=virtual_push_button virtual_display push_button keypad
group=CCMP TKIP WEP104 WEP40
eap=TTLS PEAP TLS
#THE COMMAND ENDS IN THE LINE ABOVE
systemctl restart wpa_supplicant.service
ifconfig wlan0 up
After entering those commands you should be able to connect to a specific network that you specify. If you would like to set this to be ran every time on boot, I'd suggest you to create a system service. You can read https://communities.intel.com/docs/DOC-111103 in order to learn how to create a system service.
I hope this information helps.
