    NUC6i5 video decoder display mosaic

    JohnTse

      Hello,

My NUC6i5 with graphics driver V15.45.2.4481 displays 64x64 pixels mosaic when all the following conditions are matched:

      1.  Use hardware video decoder (DXVA), and,

      2.  The video file is H.265 8-bit encoded format, and,

      3.  The width of the video is 1920.

The issue is also found in previous driver versions.

The issue is not found for H.264 format, nor 10-bit H.265, nor 720p, nor 4K video.

Here is a example video: http://video.h265files.com/video-h265.mkv

and the screen shoot of upper left corner:

          Hi JohnTse,

Could you please attach the result of the Intel® System Support Utility and the Graphics Report?

Is it straight connection HDMI to HDMI, DP to DP, etc?

          What is your Monitor’s model?

          Regards,

I have tried both HDMI and DP, 4K and FHD monitors and a 720P projector. All have this issue.

            My monitor is Viewsonic VX2475Smhl-4K.

I have another NUC D34010, which does not have this issue.

              Hi JohnTse,

You are using Windows* Server 2008 R2 (6.1.7601) on your Intel® NUC6i5SY, I suggest you to use one of the supported OS on this Intel® NUC; since Windows* Server 2008 R2 is not on the OS compatible list there are not drivers for it.

                  Please try installing all windows updates, and then I recommend you to uninstalling current driver version installed, using this method;

                  • Open the Device Manager.
                  • Find the Intel Graphics Driver.
                  • Right click Intel Graphics Driver and select Uninstall.
                  • Select the check box
                  • Delete the driver software for this device.
                  • Reboot the computer after the uninstalling process has finished.
                  • Try installing the driver manually.

This problem is still the same with updated graphics driver version 4501.

And I also found the same thing in many Intel 6th CPU desktop or notebook systems.

Is this a watermark 'feature' for trial of Intel HEVC decoder? But why it works well for 4K resolution?

                                Sorry for the late reply.

I use MPC-HC video player from here: http://www.videohelp.com/software/Media-Player-Classic-Home-Cinema

To reproduce the issue, you should turn on HW decoding for HEVC, in the Properties of Filter "LAV video decoder", then you will see "Playing [H/W]" in status bar.

You should look carefully to notice the mosaics because the RGB values differ less than 4 between mosaics' boundary.

I've reproduced the issue in NUC6i5, laptops and desktops with 6th gen CPUs. I believe so as you can.

Considering 64x64 is the coding unit block size of HEVC, this problem is likely in the decoder of Intel Graphics driver.

HEVC is still rare nowadays. I just found the problem occasionally and reported it, not have to play this kind of video.

                                Thank you.

Let me know if you experienced the same issue with different media players. We have tested our graphics with Windows 10 Media Player and H.265 is working properly.

I suggest you one of the list below:

                                    Hi Mike,

I have reproduced the same issue in my NUC 6i5SYK, OS is Windows 10 64bit.

I can notice the mosaic both in PotPlayer and Kodi when using HW  decoder. It appears in every H265 8bit video file I played.

Playback information of the example video in PotPlayer:

                                    playback info.png

Using PotPlayer's default DXVA settings as below:

                                    dxva config.png

And if enable the DXVA2 Copy-Back, the mosaic will disappear.
