Atom Processor D2550 driver issues in upgrading to Ubuntu 16.04 LTS

I am having an issue when updating from Ubuntu 14.04 LTS to 16.04 LTS. 14.04 LTS works just fine but when I upgrade to 16 I get a black screen after boot messages with no login or desktop ever being displayed. I am using the Intel Atom D2550 Processor with the "Intel Corporation Atom Processor D2xxx/N2xx Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 06). The driver that Ubuntu says it is using is the gma500 driver. Any help with this issue would be awesome!
