    Intel HD Graphics 530 - Poor performance 4K

      I'll start with my specs and list of my drivers
      Asus UX501VW:
      6700HQ, HD530, 4GB GTX 960M, 12GB DDR4 2133MHz, 1TB HDD, 4K screen.

      I am using Windows 10 Pro x64, cleanly installed and fully updated with all drivers updated as shown.

       

      The problem is: Windows 10 interface is laggy when opening/closing start menu, maximizing/minimizing windows, opening task view, scrolling web pages like facebook on chrome and more (FPS is way bellow 60).....
      when I watch 1080p movies on MPC-HC in fullscreen when trying to change volume with arrows/mouse wheel it also lags, and 4K videos are lagging and sound goes and comes back in 4K playback.
      just trying to move Spotify window around is like 7fps.

       

       

       

      Now to the funny part, none of those issues are present when I decrease the resolution from 4K to 1080p, everything is smooth like it's supposed to and no playback issues, I am pretty sure that HD530 can handle Windows 10 UI animation, web page scrolling and decode a 4K video just fine.
      I have a desktop running on HD4600 (4790K) it's very smooth and I faced none of those problems with it, and I find my Laptop very laggy and sluggish compared to it.

       

      I've done a lot of search on the internet before posting here, I found few cases like me but none of them had a solution or any useful information so I am desperately seeking help from you guys.

          Hey QuGhZx,

           

          This issue probably related to the drivers of intel HD 530,

          because this is a new iGPU we might need new drivers to come out to fix these issues. If you look at the release notes of each version of a driver, you will notice how much each version fixes and how much new issues need to be fixed.

          In your case, however, we need to wait for an intel's represantative reply concerning your 4K issues.

              I seem to have the same issue with similar hardware, however I'm using a 1440p second display (but in second display only mode).

                Anyone with any ideas? It seems to also affect games running in windowed mode, which are set to use the NVIDIA chip.

                      Problem is still present.
                      Here's the report.

                       

                      few things I have noticed:
                      * Windows 8.1/10 store apps are smooth in windowed/fullscreen mode

                      * Windows 10 start menu and some parts of the UI lag sometimes, Windows 8.1 start menu/metro UI doesn't lag
                      * Chrome and other browsers scroll semi-smooth in windowed mode but lag severely in full screen mode, except for Microsoft edge.

                      * Clearly many apps don't recognize hardware acceleration
                      * MPC-HC/VLC runs 1080p smoothly in fullscreen but uses way more battery/resources than Windows 8.1/10 built-in video player which is not an option for me since it doesn't decode many extensions and I need custom subtitles.

                        I have a similar issue, where I mainly notice that the maximize window animations of windows which exceed about 3/4th of the full 4k display size stutter extremely (10 fps or so). When resizing windows (which is also not the smoothest experience, e.g., Chrome leaves behind a black background while resizing and only refreshes intermittently) so that they are smaller than this, maximize animations are smooth. Given that this might be a Windows 10 issue I also reported on this at Microsoft Community.

                         

                        Has this graphics card been properly benchmarked for 4k displays? This seems like an easy thing to catch ...

                         

                        Short specs:

                        - Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-6700HQ CPU @ 2.60GHz , GenuineIntel

                        - Intel(R) HD Graphics 530

                         

                        P.s. I am not using the latest drivers provided by Dell (using 20.19.15.4331) because of another issue with brightness flickering which does not occur in older drivers. However, I tried with the latest Dell drivers as well (20.19.15.4454 ,A06) with the exact same results.

                            I noticed from Asus official site, ASUS ZenBook Pro UX501VW | Notebooks | ASUS USA  that the only drivers available are for Windows® 10. Have you confirmed if Windows® 8.1 is fully compatible with your computer model? I'm just asking for the availability of the drivers. I know that Intel® HD Graphics 530 should be able to support Windows® 8.1; however, I am not sure if your hardware does.

                             

                            Have you tried testing the Intel® HD Graphics 530 only? Try disabling it from the Display Adapter in Device manager.

                              I tested Windows 10 for way longer, ironically Windows 8.1 UI doesn't lag as much as 10 and the laptop uses less battery, if you're asking if the problem is because I'm using windows 8.1, then the answer is no, the problem was present in 10 and still present in 8.1 and all my drivers are installed, working and up to date and yes I tried tried disabling both Graphics card drivers and it didn't work.

                                I understand, but it had to be mentioned since your own computer manufacturer does not provide drivers for Windows® 8.1. Like I commented the Intel® HD Graphics 530 should be able to support Windows® 8.1, so I am trying to find a way to address the issue.

                                 

                                Now, is there any chance you can try to install the following driver Download Intel® Beta Graphics Driver for Windows® 10 and Windows 7*/8.1* [15.40]? I would also like to confirm if you have tried using the Microsoft basic display driver, if you haven't please give a try.

                                  I installed the latest beta and tried it, sadly there's still no improvement.
                                  using Microsoft basic display driver would only worsen things, I lose half the pixels on my taskbar, can't control brightness and everything lags way more which is normal since it's a generic driver.
                                  I think the best way to address this issue is if you test it yourself on same/similar hardware, I know this might be out of your budget, maybe, but else it'll be just harder. however, I am ready to provide you with any kind of information that would help & do any tests.

                                    That's the thing, I have tested it in several devices with Intel® HD Graphics 530 and nothing happens, from my end everything works fine; however, I do have to mention that I do not have the same hardware configuration as you do. The reason why I requested to test those drivers is because I wanted to cross out a possible driver issue and at this stage it seems like you might be facing a hardware issue. You already tried our latest drivers and even the Microsoft basic display driver without no success, so I would like to know what is the stand of ASUS regarding your issue?
