Broken RAID (Intel Matrix) reset to AHCI after plugging in a USB drive

A client is reporting the following messages in Intel Matrix Storage Manager:

  • The Raid Plug in failed to load becasue the driver is not installed correctly.

  • The serial ATA plug-in failed to load beacuse the driver is not installed correctly.

The first on all machines and the second on some.

The RAID has now for unexplainable reasons been reset to AHCI in the BIOS. This has happened to several machines of identical hardware, some with XP Pro 32bit and some with Windows Server 2003.

The problem seems to be identical to what is described in this thread:

The client has been using an external USB drive and explained that port 0 was the installed internal HDD and port 1 was seen as the external USB drive. I assume this has something to fo with it.

I have sent one engineer to help them, but as it is far it will take a few days and this is very urgent.

Does anyone have any information about this problem and how to prevent it from happening again?
