How do I set up my Mobile Intel 965 Express chipset family to tell my second display to go into its powersave mode?

i just bought a new monitor for a second display for my laptop, and when the computer goes to sleep, the scren on the laptop shuts off, but the monitor says that the cable is unplugged and won't go to power save mode. i tried on my parents laptop with the same chipset, and i had the same problem. is there a setting that i'm missing? it has version 7.1410.1329, windows vista, toshiba laptop, acer monitor.
