When I disconnect HDMI, then Intel driver create virtual display. Is it on any purposed?

I use portable computer, and there is intel graphic driver.

I check Device Manager then I got following Information.

* Intel(R) HD Graphics

* matching Hardware Ids is PCI\VEN_8086&DEV_22B0&SUBSYS_0E6A105B&REV_20

I installed few different version of drivers, Then

* `20.19.15.4331` version does not create virtual display when I pull off HDMI.

* `20.19.15.4380' and `20.19.15.4444` version does create virtual display when I pull off HDMI.

So, the question is simple.

Intel driver after 20.19.15.4380, create virtual display. Is it on any purposed? or bug?

Anyone know about this?

Hello, seungrye:

Thank you for contacting the Intel Communtiies.

I would like to double check, where do you get this "virtual display" or where can you see it?

Additionally, please provide me with the Intel® System Support Utility report from your system.

How can you get that report?

-Access: https://downloadcenter.intel.com/download/25293/Intel-System-Support-Utility https://downloadcenter.intel.com/download/25293/Intel-System-Support-Utility

-Download the utility

-Scan your system with the utility

-Export the report and attach it to your answer with the advanced editor option

The Portable PC that I have, has virtual display application. like Duet or Splashtop.

I can attach pad (that view the window screen like monitor), and see the display settings.

It shows two display. One is for related to Intel Graphic (intel virtual display), and other is not related Intel Graphics (virtual display for virtual display application).

I attached the SSU report.

Hi, seungrye:

I know its been a while but, I wanted to double check, have you tested the Beta and latest graphics drivers released by Intel?

Here I add the drivers to be used:

15.40.25.4463 // https://downloadcenter.intel.com/download/26078/Intel-Graphics-Driver-for-Windows-10-and-Windows-7-8-1-15-40-?product=88355 https://downloadcenter.intel.com/download/26078/Intel-Graphics-Driver-for-Windows-10-and-Windows-7-8-1-15-40-?product=88355

Hope this helps with the issue and hope I can hear from you with the outcome

Sorry for late reply.

I almost forgot this thread.

I tested your beta driver, and I got same result. (Issue occurred.)

I also tested Intel Graphic Driver 20.19.15.4380 and 20.19.15.4474 too. And got same result too. (Issue occurred).

So, What should I do now?

And again, What is "virtual display" (that created by intel graphic driver) used for?

Thanks.

Thank you for your answer.

If this is not causing any performance issue, I am positive this is an expected behavior from the system, it may be related to the application you mentioned was being used in the system.

In the case where performance issues are present, please let me know so I can further assist you.

It seems has no performance issue. but has usability issue.

I have this kind of situation.

1. I have headless portable x86 windows pc.

2. An application that make virtual display (via software driver). (I address this as 'My Virtual Display')

3. An application transfer the virtual display's screen image to tablet (ie. nexus 9 or ipad thing)

3.1 simplay, tablet become head (monitor) for headless portable x86 windows pc.

Issue.

1. If portable pc has no head, then Intel graphic driver make virtual display. (I address this as 'Intel Virtual Display')

1.1 I can check through `display property` via headless portable PC's head (tablet).

2. `Intel Virtual Display` work as primary display. (main display)

3. If I logout, then windows only display login screen to primary display.

3.1 In login screen, second display show only black screen.

So, If I use headless portable PC (but I cant see screen through tablet that using My Virtual Display), and Intel graphic driver installed then I cant login properly.

Sorry for my poor english.

I understand, sorry for the delayed answer seungrye, let me attempt to replicate this, I will keep you updated.

Chances are that I will test it with Splashtop, if any additional comments or steps from your end that can assist to the replication are present, please do let me know.

Hi, seungrye:

I got the nearest configuration to your PC, installed required software to get the best configuration that is like yours.

Performed some tests with the streaming PC headless and with HDMI connected as well.

I was not able to replicate the issue you are facing (when it locks, you get a black screen in the second or receiving display, tablet or PC)

I did notice some issues with Intel HD Graphics control panel, in wich some text was not prompted while having the unit headless. I will be reporting that to check if it is an issue with the software (splashtop) or the driver (Intel).

If any input from your side is present in order to get a better scenario set in order to replicate the issue, please let me know, I am more than willing to attempt to replicate this issue.

There is a notepad added in my answer as well as some screenshots that I took while performing the tests. They are for you to have a clear overview of what I did and what was experienced from my side.

This is the issue I found with Control Panel

This is how the virtual display is not shown within windows

How I did not receive a black screen while having the unit headless, this is from the Surface Pro 4

This is how the system looked with 4438 driver and without HDMI connected.

Hello.

Thanks for your research.

But, I mean headless is not either external monitor nor monitor attached pc (like imac, notebook, surface etc).

but, literally, monitor-less device. (like Intel NUC device.)

So, I attach some image.

Connect Viritual Display to my portable headless PC. (I connect only Power cable / wireless keyboard, mouse, virtual monitor -through iphone-. Not physical monitor (like HDMI thing) )

In Display property, I can see 2 display. (one is my virtual display, and the other is Intel's)

In Intel Control Panel, I can see selected display is 'Virtual Display' (by Intel)

(And, The virtual display -through iphone- is secondary monitor, because Intel Virtual Display occupy the main monitor)

Intel Display Driver version.

Thanks.

Hello, seungrye:

Correct, I did get that configuration, I mentioned I connected HDMI to check how the system behaved in both scenarios.

I had the NUC headless, only the keyboard and mouse were connected. I just took a picture of the configuration I had.

Same graphics driver, configuration but only one display within Windows.

Do you have the option to disable or remove that second screen?

Some additional comments and things to be checked.

By any chance, do you have the option to get this tested with another device? An android tablet or maybe another PC?

This is to check, if the iOS version creating this second display under Windows settings? Also, are you using Duet or Splashtop? I haven't test it with Duet so far.

Please be aware this is not to point someone out as the source of the issue, it is to find out the scenario where you get the issue and then proceed accordingly.

Hope I can hear from you soon.

Thanks,

Ah!! Sorry. I miss very important information.

My virtual display use custom made softwared virtual display.

It has it's own virtual display driver.

(so, In the issued configuration, The OS has two display adaptor.

One is for Intel's, and the other is for mine)

But Duet, Splash top uses not have their own virtual display but use intel's.

(In this configuration, The OS has just one display adaptor. the Intel's)

that's the different.

I found very similar configuration that http://www.easynlight.com/ Easy&Light |Welcome to Easy&Light software is same as mine.

(It use software virtual display driver)

Sorry for my poor english.

Thanks.

Hello, seungrye:

Thank you for that information.

As per the scenario that we have in here, what changes is whether or not there is a second display created by the software used.

With Splashtop, I had no issues using the remote display application, I was able to normally use my phone as a monitor.

I would say this is a software issue due to the fact that it is what is changing from one configuration to another, in which the one with splashtop is working and the other one with the second app that creates the virtual display has issues.

Because of that, I believe it would be good to contact the support for the developers of the app you are currently using.

From this end, we provide support for Desktop and mobile hardware/ regular drivers, in order to get further information about software development, I recommend you to contact our developer forums. I am recommending this forum since it has software development peers that can assist you with this inquiry and know why it is having this behavior. The options you can opt to were added below:

Here the forum support for Mobile Software Development: https://software.intel.com/en-us/forums/mobile-software-development https://software.intel.com/en-us/forums/mobile-software-development

He was correct about what he has reported, I could copy the same problem with the NUC type of devices,

tried Bay Trail, Cherry Trail and Braswell platforms, they all have the same problem:

  1. Display OK at the beginning
  2. Unplug HDMI cable from the system
  3. Now put system to sleep
  4. Plug HDMI cable back to the system (while it's still sleeping)
  5. Now, wake up the system
  6. Problem appears by 100% – a non-exist virtual Display – "Generic Non-PnP Monitor" device now appears
  7. Output mode being changed to extended desktop: Virtual display + the screen, virtual display takes over the display priority
  8. To recover, unplug HDMI and plug it back, display back to normal (Virtual Display – Generic Non-PnP Monitor disappeared)
