Error checking in RAID 5

We have 6 Intel X25-E 32 gb in a RAID5 configuration on an Intel Matrix ICH8R controller.

We believe one or more of the disks to have bad sectors or some other fault.

What is the recommended method of doing full disk scans for SSD drives in a RAID configuration?

Kind regards,

Jordan

Hello, I would like to let you know that if you want to perform a fast diagnostic scan using the Solid State Drive toolbox you have to set the hard disk drives as non RAID disks in order for you to perform this diagnostic and know if the Solid State Drive have a problem or not.

You can download the Solid State Drive toolbox 2.0 from the following link:

I do not think running the diagnostic scan from toolbox is wise as it seems to write to the SSD for testing.

From pdf

"Run Fast Diagnostic Scan

Use this option to perform a quick check on the health of an Intel SSD.

The scan checks 1.5 GB of the SSD for READ errors. The scan then creates 1 GB of random data and then compares it for data integrity. The scan takes approximately three to five minutes to complete and requires a minimum of 5GB of unutilized space to run."

If it creates 1 GB then an SSD out of RAID will likely corrupt what you had on their.

What makes you think there is one or more of the disks to have bad sectors or some other fault? If your SSD's are slowing down for writes this is unfortunately true due to the way SSD's work in RAID as of today until TRIM can be coded for RAID software to work.

Install Intel Rapid Storage Technology and from the console click your RAID name, type > advanced > click Verify

clicking Enable for Write-back cache will help performance.

If you are asked to initialize when doing a Verify do so as this is what I had to do first to get the verify option but to be sure I suggest you backup.
