Hi All,
My new build rig with i7-6700K CPU seems to run very hot and the temperature cycles between 62-94 degrees (even as high as 98 deg ) when under 100% load.
I think this imples it is hitting thermal thresholds and backing of speed/voltage or whatever...
I am running Asus Z170 Deluxe - no overcclocking - no plan to either.
BIOS - everything set to 'Auto' or Default
OS Ubuntu 16.04
Things I have tried:
1. Reseated the CPU cooler (Cooler Master Hyper 103) several times no effect
- reseating had little or no effect
2. Upgraded the CPU cooler to Cooler Master hyper D92 dual fan - very little effect, maybe a couple of degrees (I thought the first was not making good contact)
- reseated the new cooler - no improvement
3. Set the CPU Fan to 100% - in case it was fan control loop lag - no effect, still see the cycling
4. Keep the case open or closed little or no effect
5. Set Bios to auto default everywhere - no effect
6. Set DRAM freq to 2133/Auto - no effect
But then I am at a loss to get the temperature down -
(I have another i7-3820 it's a 130W chip and it never goes above 74 degrees and doesn't cycle)
I plan to use this as a number crunching machine rather than games... so stable, heavy duty CPU loading is the objective.
I thought it was a CPU die to heat spreader heat transfer defect - but it passes Intel diagnostics....
Any ideas what it could be and how to fix?
Thanks

In closer detail 3 minutes duration, 1 second updates temperature cycles every ~8-10 seconds
this was with new CPU dual fan cooler - so a little bit lower peaks
Intel Linux Diagnostic test results.
I have no idea why it thinks the detected clock is 5.43GHz!!!
All BIOS settings are no overclock.
Took a bit of messing about to get Linux Live CD IPDT version working as the instructions are wrong.

Hello, inversionlayer:
Please, note the CPU frequency of your report, the system is overclocked;
--- Reading CPU Frequency ---
Expected CPU Frequency is --> 4.00
Detected CPU Frequency is --> 5.43141
Try setting your BIOS configuration to default, and check if the issue persists.
Regards,
Amy.

Hi Amy
Thanks for the reply.
The problem is I'm not overclocking or over voltage.
It turns out, as indicated by others, that the Intel Diagnostics test Linux version 2.20 (early 2015) is older than the i7 6700K - so cannot be trusted.
This explains the impossibly high clock frequency 5.4GHz figure- it's just not possible from either CPU or motherboard.
It might be too that the100% load test pass cannot be trusted either.
The BIOS settings are shown below everything set to default/auto.
Also the memory is 3200 but set to Auto (2133) in BIOS I tried 3200 but problem persists.
I now believe it is a faulty CPU and I have wasted enough time and money buying new cooler.
I want to RMA the CPU.
