At Wits End With This NUC - Nothing Works With Windows 7 Install

    Piratesgold

Okay-I'm about to launch this NUC into a nuclear pit!  I have tried every method I can to get this NUC to accept and install Windows 7 x64 Pro.

I have had some good advise Hegenious but unfortunately it didn't work.

      Here is what I have:

      NUC Kit NUC6i5SYH

      Crucial 16GB memory x2

      Crucial MX200 SSD - 500GB

      Kingston Predator M.2 (2280) PCIe G2 x4 - 250GB

Now I have attempted the Intel Windows 7 USB3 Creator Utility 3 different times- No Go

Tried to build the boot.wim and install.wim using the instructions with this link:http://codeabitwiser.com/2014/03/how-to-install-windows-7-with-only-usb-3-0-ports/

      Again No Go!

The install gets through the initial phase but when it gets to the screen to input your name and PC name-no mouse and no keyboard!

So I tried to build an "autounattend.xml - installed Windows 7 fine but STILL no USB 3 connect so again no mouse and no keyboard-but it looked pretty!

So do I return this NUC and get something else?  This is for doing demos of our software so I am attempting to install Windows 7 Pro then VM Workstation 11 then my virtual software for my demos.

What is sad is this-I have peers of mine who say they installed Windows 7 Pro on the same NUC I have with no problems!  I find that hard to believe but that is what they tell me.

Suggestions?  I would be willing to pay to have this setup with Windows 7 Pro just so I don't have to screw with it anymore!  I have never had this many problem building a "Windows 7 PC" in my entire life!

Yep-I'm at my wits end with this NUC!

          Here's what worked for me:

          1. Download and extract the files for the Windows 7 USB3 Creator Utility.
          2. Download and extract the latest available Windows 7 USB Driver package (v4.0.4.51).
          3. In file manager, expose the Drivers folder within the Creator Utility file tree. Its path within the tree is USB_3.0_Win7_64_4.0.0.36\Intel USB 3.0 eXtensible Host Controller Driver PV 4.0.0.36/Drivers.
          4. Replace all of the files in the Drivers folder of the Creator Utility with all of the files in the Drivers folder of the USB Driver package.
          5. Use this updated Creator Utility package to prepare a new Windows Installer USB flash disk. IMPORTANT: DO NOT USE THE FLASH DISK IMAGE THAT YOU USED PREVIOUSLY; MAKE A NEW ONE FROM AN ORIGINAL WINDOWS INSTALLER ISO FILE!

          Hope this helps,

Thank you Scott for the effort!  Although it didn't work-and I thought it was going to since it took a really long time to setup the OS when I loaded it on the NUC (stopped for a long duration at 65% and then at 96%) so I was hopeful.

I followed your steps exactly so maybe, just maybe, it is a bad NUC or possibly a bad Windows 7 Pro ISO-don't know which but I think I have two choices at this point:

            1.  Ask for a new NUC under warranty to see if that cures this problem or

            2.  Decide on something else that may (or may not) do the same as the NUC.

I can't think of anything else to try!  Does Intel Support help with issues like this?  If so, how in blazes do I contact them?  Am I the only NUC owner that is having or had this problem that wouldn't go away?

Again, thank you for you help and I will weigh my options for the next few days to see which way to go to get a demo box that works!

if you prepare the Windows usb Stick with the USB creator Tool make Sure You run the tool with System Administration. u can also Try to Patch the Windows Stick twice Thats work for me. After the USB creator says Done, Klick Start again

Okay-I think I may have found a problem!  When I use the DISMGUI as explained below, I get two driver install errors (within the install.wim):
Perhaps this has been my problem all along-drivers will not install into the INSTALL.WIM correctly!  Now to find a solution!!!

                Hi Ilikerhinos,

                4. 22. Install Windows with the edition you chose from step 18

When everything is done, Windows Update may not work. You need to download and install Windows6.1-KB947821-v34-x64 which will correct an error with Windows Update. Once done, run Windows Update again and let it go for as long as it takes to find updates (could take a few hours).

It is necessary to download the drivers from https://downloadcenter.intel.com/ using a working machine.

Got it to work!  Finally using the DISMGUI on ANOTHER PC!  Seems the issue is my Lenovo PC so now its fixed!  Thanks to all for the help!

For posterity sake-seeing the USB install.wim issues gave me the info I needed to  find the solution.

I forgot to mention this possibility. I wasn't able to use the DISM tools on my main development PC either - and I don't know why this was the case. I had to do it on another NUC that I had recently set up.

                      Glad you sorted it

I would never have thought that success or failure can depend on which PC you create the USB media.

Come to think of it, I created the Win7 USB media on my ASUS ultrabook just got lucky I guess.

And I used command line dism commands instead of a GUI, perhaps that made a difference too.

Basically it was copy&paste from here: How to install Windows 7 on a PC with only USB 3.0 ports

No, the DISM GUI, under the covers, just makes calls to the command-line tools, so that is not the cause (and I have done it both ways). I believe that the issue is the result of what is already installed on the PC being used. For example, having different (usually older) USB 3.0 drivers on this PC Frankly, the minute I had it working, I stopped looking...
