With more work, I managed to have examples using mraa workin. But upm is not working.
It tries to find libmraa.so.0, but it is not in /usr/lib. There you find: ibmraa.so.1
With Node, it seems though to have a relieable environment (on Edison)

As you mentioned, mraa and upm are not compatible with the later versions of Node.JS. There are methods to make mraa work with newer versions of node, however they don't work at 100%. So, my best suggestion is that you submit an issue to the mraa and upm developers in https://github.com/intel-iot-devkit/mraa or https://github.com/intel-iot-devkit/upm

I have found a way to upgrade to Node 4.2 and to have a working environment with MRAA and UPM.
The complete process has taken more than 5 hours, not really an easy path.
I have documented the entire process in:
Sooner, we should find a better and easier way.
