Aero crashing on Win7 with an i7-6700HQ

Hi !

I bought a brand new MSI PE70 6QE with Win10, but for some reasons I decided to install Windows 7 instead.

The problem is that after installing all the last drivers, everything is running well EXCEPT that the computer is unable to run Aero more than 30 minutes. It makes quite mad because my older computer (with an i5 and only 6Go of DDR3) had no problems running it, and now that I bought a good computer (i7-6700HQ and 24Go of DDR4) it doesn't survive to Aero.

It looks like the integrated graphics are not powerfull enought. Can someone help me with my problem? I'd really like to run Aero smoothly on a computer with that configuration !

Thanks a lot, and sorry for my english !

Intel Core i7-6700HQ

Nvidia GeForce GTX 960M (2Go)

SSD 500Go + HDD 1To

24Go DDR4

Hi,

From what I see, your laptop has a discrete videocard, which is not from Intel. So I think you should look to solve your problems to MSI, because they are the manufacturers.

Sure you can try latest driver from nvidia for GeForce GTX 960M

Hi!

Yes it have a video card, but I've seen that Explorer is always using the integrated graphics. The GTX is working absolutely well in programs like Photoshop or during Benchmarks (i've done some with Heaven Benchmark).

In the Nvidia Configuration Panel, I can change parameters for the programs, I can tell a program to use the integrated graphics or the GTX. BUT it doesn't work for Explorer, the setting is locked at "integrated graphics". That would be ok if the chipset was powerful enough to run Aero, but it doesn't seem like it is.

That's why I'm looking to Intel's side. The problem is quite hard to define, I don't know if the GTX is supposed to run Aero or to help the integrated graphics when they're not sufficient, or if the problem only comes from the Intel chipset. The GTX doesn't have any activity (I'm watching it with MSI Afterburner) while running Aero.

Thanks.

Intel driver has some issues at the moment, they are working at a new driver. There is temporary beta driver https://downloadcenter.intel.com/download/25848/Intel-Beta-Graphics-Driver-for-Windows-7-8-1-10-15-40- Download Intel® Beta Graphics Driver for Windows* 7/8.1/10 [15.40]

Also you can go to bios and disable the Intel igpu.

I'll give a try to that beta driver.

Unfortunately I don't have any option in the bios to deactivate the Intel chipset. Strange thing too is that when Aero stop working, the processor activity is not even up to 20% of its capacities..

In task manager you see only the CPU performance, Aero uses the igpu which is different from the CPU.

I installed the beta driver 30min ago, and I just got the window asking me to deactivate Aero because performances were bad...

I don't know what to tell you. I have an i7-6700k and aero is working just fine, I play games and i don't have discrete graphic card yet.

Go to Internet Options / Advanced tab and enable 64-bit processes for Enhanced Protected Mode. This is a temporary solution, if it works for you till new drivers will be released.

And that Laptop came with windows 10 for a reason. Microsoft will stop support for windows 7, and encourages people to go on windows 10.

Also Intel drivers are more optimized for windows 10, so if that Laptop came with windows 10 I advise you to go with windows 10.

I'll try this later. Doesn't it only apply to Internet Explorer?

I feel really comfortable with Windows 7 and I don't like Windows 10, that's why I keep using 7. No matters if Microsoft tries to force me to go with Windows 10, that's not what I want. It would be great if somebody from Intel could tell me something about my problem..

Internet explorer's files are used in file browsing also ... if u didn't noticed after you make that modification it tells you to restart pc.

Hello, WTPThom:

Thank you for contacting the Intel Communities.

I recommend you to install the drivers provided by your OEM directly: https://www.msi.com/Laptop/support/PE70-6QE.html# down-driver&Win7 https://www.msi.com/Laptop/support/PE70-6QE.html# down-driver&Win7 64

Have you tested the behavior of your system with the driver version: 15.40.18.4380?

4380 download: https://downloadcenter.intel.com/download/25818/Intel-Graphics-Driver-for-Windows-7-8-1-10-15-40-?product=88345 https://downloadcenter.intel.com/download/25818/Intel-Graphics-Driver-for-Windows-7-8-1-10-15-40-?product=88345

I look forward to your outcome with the drivers advised and the workaround given by Ronin.

Hi Esteban,

I reintalled the chipset driver from MSI website. I also tried to install the "Intel VGA" driver from there, but it says that I already have a more recent one. Also, when I first installed Windows 7, I took all of the drivers from MSI website, and it didn't work better than now.

I also downloaded the 4380 and it also tells me that I have a more recent version. That's because, following the advice from Ronin I installed the Beta.

I'll keep you updated.

Thank you for giving me a bit of your time !

Hi,

You can uninstall the one that is on your laptop and install other.

Hi everyone,

I decided to update Windows 7, so I installed all the "important updates". Nothing has changed regarding my problem, even with the last drivers and the system updated, the laptop is still unable to run Aero.

I looked for the setting you asked me to change sooner, the "Enable 64-bit processes for Enhanced Protected Mode" in Internet Explorer settings, but I can't find it. It's not in the "Advanced" tab.

Any more suggestions? 😕

Well, this option it seems is only in windows 8.1 x64 bit. I think you will have to test older drivers or to wait for a new driver. Sorry about that.

Anyway I think you should have tested your notebook with the windows version it came with, to see if it doesn't have any problem.

Hello, WTPThom:

Thank you for your answers, let me try to replicate this with the nearest configurationg available.

In the mean time, it would be helpful to have the following information for the replication of the issue.

1. Your Intel® System Support Utility report, exported after scanning your system with the tool here: https://downloadcenter.intel.com/download/25293/Intel-System-Support-Utility https://downloadcenter.intel.com/download/25293/Intel-System-Support-Utility

2. Fill out the form and attach it in your answer as well: /thread/77761 https://communities.intel.com/thread/77761

I look forward to hearing from you.

Does it fail every single time, or only sometimes?

If you can offer a % rate please do.

Everytime Aero is launched with its "normal" settings. By normal I mean, without deactivating any of its animations. It works a little bit longer if I deactivate some animations, shadows..

Hi WTPThom

It seems that your laptop has a new bios: https://www.msi.com/Laptop/support/PE70-6QE.html# down-bios Support For PE70 6QE | MSI Global | Laptops - The best gaming laptop provider

Update it and see if this still happens.
