hardware acceleration not engaging in Chrome or Firefox or windows media player

i7 6700hq. Latest official graphics drivers

Playing 4k video in youtube using Chrome or firefox, cpu usage hits 90%+.

Hardware decoding is not engaging for some reason.

Hardware acceleration is enabled in Firefox settings.

Using Microsoft Edge, cpu is only 3%, hardware acceleration engaging properly.

It's like the intel igp is not detecting video played in firefox or chrome..

Also, h264 video played in windows media player will get choppy midway through a video. I monitored the gpu with gpu-z, and HD530 will start at 1000mhz and play the video smoothly, and then all of a sudden drop to 350mhz and have a seizure.

It just stops hardware decoding randomly.

Hi link626,

Your system is giving you a low graphics performance. Please download and run Intel® System Support Utility and send me the results.

results linked above.

if Microsoft apps are able to use Intel graphics properly, does this mean that Chrome and firefox are just crappy coded?

Hi link626,

I noted your laptop has hybrid graphics; it means the Intel® HD 530 works together with Nvidia GeForce GTX 960M. I suggest you to visit Nvidia website and download the latest driver.

i have all the latest drivers for everything.

I'm wondering if Intel can simply test the performance difference between the different browsers and see the cpu load.

I'm just curious whether the issue is with Intel drivers or Firefox and Chrome.

Hi link626,

Intel already tested the performance of our graphics with different browsers. Firefox and Chrome are not using all the processor graphics features available yet; so the quality is not the best.

that's not the only problem, I have the HD 520 and as soon as I turn on hardware acceleration in Chrome, I have every few hours completely blurred a black screen for 1-2 seconds and Opera is the font.
