Rapid Start Technology Vs Windows 7 hiberfil.sys

My question is: Does one need to have a hiberfile.sys file to utilize Intel’s Rapid Start Technology? Or are these two technologies independent of each other? Or are they codependent ?“

The reason I ask is by default Lenovo T431s & T440s images their machine to have 7 gigabyte hibernation partition for Intel's technology.  Windows utilizes 4 gigabytes for the hibernation file.  This means 11 gigabytes are being used towards hibernation.   If these technologies are truly independent, then I would be able to recover either one of these technologies drive space.
