Rating Submission Bug?

Hi - I tried to enter a rating on an application that I purchased and I keep getting the Error dialog that says "Invalid Characters in review text".  I went through and pulled out quotes, exclamation points, etc. and still I get this error.

I have double checked and there is nothing in my comment in the way of strange characters other than period, comma, and normal letters (small and upper case). No tabs or extraneous spaces.  I have 245 characters left, so I'm sure I have not used too many characters.

Could this be a bug?

PS I did check the known issues and see a suggestion to remove special characters - again I'm pretty sure I did that.

    Jonny,

I have tested the AppUp(SM) and reviewed some applications and they all worked fine with any issues while submitting the ratings/reviews.

Please can you let me know which specific application you were trying to rate and getitng this issue.

FYI: I was trying on Windows 7 Starter. I will verify it.

    Rooven:

I tried to put in a review for My Little Artist.

The offending text I tried to enter was:

    "

I would pay for more features, especially tricks like the mirror brush that keep young artists motivated.

I am going to try it with a wacom tablet to see if it works on my Netbook.

    Great Stuff.

    "

Is it possible that length of sentences or strings on a line might be affecting this?

    Thank you,

    Jonny

    Jonny,

    Thank you for your reply.

I downloaded the 'My Little Artist' application, it runs fine on my system and also I was able to successfully enter my rating and write a review. I did not get any error while entering or submitting the review.

I entered the same text that you stated above.

Probably it is something with your system that is preventing your from properly entering reviews. Is this the only application you cannot enter review? Can you try to review another of your downloaded applications? (If you have downloaded any others).

If you are having issues while writing and submitting reviews, please can you re-install the AppUp(SM) Center again and see if it makes any difference. Please also update windows to the latest updates available from Microsoft.

FYI: I was testing on Windows 7 Starter on an Asus Netbook and also on a Samsung Netbook. Are you using XP or Windows 7?

    Regards

    Hi Rooven:

I have theory about what is going on - or at least some new observations.

Despite the stated limited of 600 characters, the review system seems to raise an error dialog about invalid characters regardless of review content's characters, but always once the number of characters exceeds 256 (or there abouts).

I've tried this with a simple number stream of 1234567890 repeating until I hit the limit (no special characters).

it fails consistently and on multiple different applications.

I am running Winndows 7 Starter on an ASus EEPC Netbook.  I will try to test from a different system as well, but it feels like this is a more general issue.

Thanks Hal - I just want to pass on that I've verified that the bug exists when trying to enter reviews on a Windows XP Laptop running the same version of the client.

Hi - I was wondering if this should perhaps be posted as a known issue, unless there is something I've misdiagnosed.

Unless I'm missing something, posting a review can be a fairly confusing/frustrating process if you do not know why the review is being rejected.

    Thank you,

    Hi Jonny,

    Thank you for the information.

We are investigating this issue and if it is found to be a known issue after testing than only we can add it in the known issue documents. If there has been a fix or a work-around it will also be mentioned here. In case of a work-around, it will be mentioned in our known issue document. At this stage we are still investigating and we cannot add it in the known issue yet.

I will update you on this once I get more information.

I would like to confirm the issue on another XP system while writing a review for "Process Viewer". Same circumstances and attempts as OP to fix but to no avail. Also please up the 600 char limit to 900 - 1200 so people can write a more serious review of some of these apps.

    Daniel,

    Thank you for your information.

Please can you let us know if you are using the latest version on the AppUp(SM). If not, please can you test it with the latest version and let us know if there is still the issue?

Link to download the latest version: http://www.intel.com/appup/

Also are you getting any errors while writing or submitting the review?

Moreover, on the latest version on the AppUp(SM) you can use on alpla-numeric characters. Non alpha-numeric characters cannot be used. This is currently a limitation and known issue: http://communities.intel.com/docs/DOC-4695#Known_Issues

Concerning the number of characters on the Review Section, I will pass the information to the development team for consideration.

    Thank you for your feedback.

    Rooven

    Hi:

I've retested in the latest client 2.x of the AppUp and this problem still seems to exist.

Additionally I've found the same or similar problem in submission of comments to publishers of Apps per that feature which is now available from the "Options" pulldown menu shown in each applications information area.  Specifically I found that the use of any quotes or dashes in a comment to a pubhlisher results in an oops error message, but does not specifically list those characters as being illegal.
