NUC 7i5BNK HDMI to soundbar issue

    Michel020

I'm using my NUC as a HTPC with the following configuration:

Computer: Intel NUC Kit NUC7i5BNK i5-7260U*

Operating System: Windows 10 Pro Version 1709 64-bit

Hard Drive: Samsung SSD 500GB 1.8/3.2G 960 EVO PCIe M.2 SAM

      Memory: G.Skill Ripjaws DDR4-2133  (D4S16GB 2133-15 Ripjaws K2 GSK)

      TV: Philips 55PUS6501

      Soundbar: Philips HTL7140B

NUC, BIOS, TV and Soundbar have all been updated with the latest drivers.

When I hook up my NUC to the soundbar (which is required to get 5.1 sound) I get the Intel NUC BIOS, after that the screen turns black and Windows won't show up. When I change the resolution from 4K to 1080p, still no visuals in Windows. I've also tried another HDMI cable, without any succes.

When I hook the NUC to the HDMI 3 or 4 port of my TV, everything works perfect, except for the fact that I can only have 2.0 sound. Also worth mentioning is that my former NUC (5i5RYK) had the same configuration and had no issues whatsoever connected to my soundbar.

So directly to my TV everything works fine, but with sound limitations. And hooked to my soundbar I can only see the BIOS but no Windows. Which made me think there is a driver issue.

For my limited knowlegde I've tried everything, also the older graphic drivers, but nothing solved this problem so far. I'm a little out of options here, can someone help me figuring out what to do to get 4K on my screen with 5.1 sound? All help is welcome and thanks in advance for all the help!

          Hello Michel020,

Thank you for joining the Intel Community Support.

There is an HDMI 2.0 Firmware Update that I would like you to install in your Intel® NUC. Please let me know if it fixes the issue.
          -Version: 1.72 (Latest)

Also, I would like to know how you are connecting the Intel® NUC to the soundbar speaker and the TV. Please provide as many details as you can, whether you are using a splitter or a straight-through connection (HDMI-to-HDMI) with a single cable.

In addition, make sure the onboard HDMI CEC settings are enabled. To view or change the onboard HDMI CEC settings:

1.Press F2 during boot to enter BIOS Setup.
2.Go to Advanced > Devices > Onboard Devices.
3.In the Legacy Device Configuration pane, enable HDMI CEC Control.

Finally, I would like to gather basic system information. Please scan it using the Intel® System Support Utility. Follow the steps below:
1.Download the Intel® System Support Utility and save the application to your system here.
2.Open the application and click Scan to see system and device information. The Intel® System Support Utility defaults to the Summary View on the output screen following the scan. Click the menu where it says summary to change to Detailed View.
3.To save your scan, click Next and click Save. You can save the file to any accessible location on your computer.
          4. Attach the report to this thread.

            Hi Wanner G.

Thank you for your fast reply.

            - I've tried the HDMI update, but it seems to fail.

            - The NUC is straight to connected with a single HDMI-to-HDMI cable and without a splitter or something.

            - The CEC settings have also been enabled in the BIOS.

            - I've used the System Support Utility and attach the log as well.

The HDMI update failed, When I press "Get FW Version" it tells me "System connection failed!"

I hope this information is usefull and you can help me out. Thanks a lot in advance!

Edit: As soon as I rebooted the system and run the HDMI update tool again it told me:

              Graphics Adapter:

              Intel (LS-PCON): 0x0D

              @

              Get FW Version:

              Current on-board F/W Version: Bobcat App: MC2800 v1.72  (cut2.2)

              CMDB: Ver:0.3  (Custom Ver: 1.0)

Another strange thing probably worth mentioning is that the sound on HDMI 4 (the port directly to the TV whre  Windows does display properly) only works for certain programs.

For example, when I do the speaker configuration for my TV the test shows the green bar for volume, but I dont hear a thing. When I play music or watch a movie, I do hear sound. But for example when my daughter plays a game I don't hear a thing.

When I look at the properties of the Philips FTV, which is the standard audio device because speakers are strangly unavailable, it says at the Levels section: "Intel(R) Display Audio - HDMI 1", while the NUC hooked on to HDMI 4. I hope this helps and will attach a screenshot as well.

Hi, I found a workaround for this problem, although not for the audio issues.

I use a Xbox One X gameconsole which supports UHD 4:4:4/4:2:2. I found out that at least the drivers for the NUC 7i5BNK don’t support this.

As stated before: I get the BIOS on screen, but as soon as Windows loads the screen stays blank. When I change the TV settings from UHD 4:4:4/4:2:2 to UHD 4:2:0 Windows shows up! When I change it back to UHD 4:4:4/4:2:2 the screen turns blank again. Is there going to be support for UHD 4:4:4/4:2:2 in the future? Because this settings are at least for the Xbox One X superior.

The audio issue I’ve mention in this post still remains, which is, I think also related to the graphic drivers for Windows 10. Any guess how to fix these?

                    Hello Michel020,

Thank you for the valuable information provided and for trying the steps suggested before. I was looking at the reports attached to the thread, and there is a new Intel® Graphics Driver available. Please install the newer driver version to see whether it fixes the issues.

Here is the link to the Intel® Graphics Driver Version: 15.65.5.4982 (Latest).

                      Hi Wanner G.,

Unfortunately the driver won't install due some kind of compatibility issues. Driver is not validated for this computer, ask the manufacturer for a proper version. Thats weird, since Intel(R) is the manufacturer.

I've attached a screenshot of the error message.

                        8 - Click "Have Disk".
                        9 - Click "Browse".
10 - Access the designated location or folder, and access a folder called "Graphics".
11 - Select the file called "igdlh64" or "igdlh".
12 - Click Open, then click OK, and finally click Next. Drivers are now being installed.

Thanks for your explaination! I've succcesfully installed the new driver, but unfortunately this didn't fix the sound issue.

                            Hello Michel020,

I am sorry to hear that the driver did not fix the sound issues. Now, were you able to set the UHD 4:4:4/4:2:2 settings and get any display on your TV?

I am also curious about the speakers not showing in the properties of your Philips FTV. Have you tried connecting only the Soundbar speaker to the TV and take a look at the properties of the TV one more time? Please attach pictures if possible.
I will do research about this issue due to the fact that the audio is provided through the Intel® Graphics driver when connecting the unit to a TV or monitor using an HDMI or DisplayPort cable.

                              Hi Wanner G.

Thanks again for your assistance. The UHD 4:4:4/4:2:2 settings indeed showed a display on my TV, except it shows 1080p instead of 4K, but thats probably because the bandwith of UHD 4:4:4/4:2:2 is larger and requires HDMI 2.1. The Xbox One X does, so I could compare those two.

I have tried a lot of different setups. Directly to TV, on different HDMI porst and with different cables. Directly to the soundbar, and also with different cables. I also tested other devices on the same ports with the same cables and settings and they all provided perfect 5.1 audio.

I'v made screenshots of the settings for the NUC as well as some (maybe) relevant settings of the TV.

01 - Speakers not connected and while testing the config: no audio

02 - Sound - Record, shows a graphical bar for the mic while no mic is connected.

03 - Properties of speakers (I think only for the front jack of the NUC somehow?)

04 - Properties of Philips FTV shows info about connections: L R HDMI Digital plug

05 - Advanced Properties, while testing: no sound output except for one small beep when playing at 24 bits, 96000 Hz

I will attach the next screenshots in the next post because the max is five attachments.

06 - Supported audio only shows two channels instead of six.

07 - Virtual sound is off, but only shows headset related sound like ATMOS for headphones and MS Sonic for headphones

08 - Events with some info

                                09 - Details on drivers

And the last, four pictures of some TV settings:

10 - HDMI Ultra HD settings

                                  11 - EasyLink settings

                                  12 - Advanced speaker settings

13 - Advanced Audio output (ARC)

I saw a lot of information in audio properties of the NUC at "Philips FTV - Controller Properties - Details" but that would be like 40 sceenshots, I'm hope that information can be obtained easier? If it's relevant for this matter?

I hope this helps, thanks again for all the time and effort you put into fixing this issue!
