    R1304SPOSHBNR Random Fan Spin-up Issues

    vcantrell

      Greetings,

First off. I know this is identical to another question posted here: Random fan spin-up on R1304SPOSHBNR

However, that did not get a solid resolution and we are having identical problems so I wanted to post and see if we could get this figured out.

We have 3 of these servers and all three of them exhibit the same issue. Like the previous post, I have upgraded the firmware to the latest available firmware and examined the SEL and found no log entries to indicate why this might be happening. Enabling Acoustic mode in the BIOS does cause it to boot quietly and remain quiet, with the exception of these random spin-ups which are still at full speed/volume.

Touching on the response from the previous post: is there a list of validated memory that Intel knows works perfectly with this unit? The memory we installed in them is as follows: Kingston KVR21E15D8/8 (2x 8GB 2133MHz DDR4 ECC CL15 DIMMs) and it appears to perfectly meet the RAM specifications for this unit. The datasheet on the memory can be found here: https://www.kingston.com/dataSheets/KVR21E15D8_8.pdf

We would love to get this problem resolved A.S.A.P. as we are installing these units at clients and getting complaints about noisy servers and disruptions in workflow.

I have attached the debug logs from the iBMC as well for reference.

          Hello Vince,

Regarding your question, “with Fans Spinning up randomly“.  Just to ensure the system is using an Intel s1200SP Family board.
If this correct I will first recommend to reset and swap around the fans.
          Then Flash to latest BIOS.
If this is not the correct system board model, please let me know to find the correct BIOS for it.

Also, will recommend to test it with minimum configuration.
          One memory Dimm.
If there is anything else we can help please feel free to ask.

          Best regards,

          Henry A.

Swap the fans on all 3 of the servers that exhibit the same issue? That doesn't seem practical...

We are already running the latest BIOS.

I can test with one memory DIMM, but I don't expect that would change the issues since the issues seem to be related to something different.

Is there a list of supported RAM for the R1304SPOSHBNR systems that we could purchase and test? We couldn't find a list of supported memory for these systems anywhere. If memory is indeed the issue, we'd prefer to test with RAM that is approved and verified as 100% functional with these units.

            Thanks,

            Vince

              Hello Vince,

Regarding your question, if testing the board with just one memory stick is part of diagnostic.  I’ve seen in the past that one memory can be damaged or not compatible and will cause the fans and even CPU overheating.
For a list of compatible memory, I am afraid there is not one, but you can check the Technical Product Support manual, on page 17.

If there is anything else we can help please feel free to ask.

              Best regards,

                Henry,

I'll test with some verified RAM that we know works with this machine that is coming in early next week and update this post once we have tested, probably middle of next week.

I HIGHLY doubt it's a bad RAM stick, though, since this issue affects ALL 3 of our identical machines, as well as other users who clearly have the exact same problem. What steps do we need to go through to get this escalated to a point where someone can investigate further since it affects a large number of machines?

                Thanks,

                Vince

                  Hello Vince,

Thank you for your understanding.  Please apply or reapply the latest BIOS and test it with one memory stick.  Also, another question, when you see that these FANs spin up and down.  Does this happens at boot up or when running an APP?
Thank you again for all the help.

I am just following on your FAN Spinning problems.

                      Henry,

We have ensured the latest BIOS is running on all machines. Like the previous issue, there is no rhyme or reason as to the fan spin up. If I enable Acoustic mode in BIOS, the fans don't spin up loudly during startup, but the random full speed loud spinups still occur, even with Acoustic mode on.

We have tested with 1 RAM stick with no success. There is something else going on, and it's not just a hardware issue with one server because all 3 of our servers do it, and clearly others on this forum have this issue. How do we get this escalated to deeper investigation so we can get this resolved?

                      Thanks,

                      Vince

                        Hello Vince,

Thank you for the update information and the test done.
It sounds a little more that needs to send to engineering.
Could you please contact the normal support team, at 916-377-7000 option 4.
Open a case and also send them the logs from all the servers.
This will be the System Logs.
And from there they will be able to receive the logs and send them for diagnostic and verify what might be the cause.

If there is anything else we can help please feel free to ask.
