    NUC6CAYH slow USB 3.0 ports

    tcaine

I've just bought the NUC so I don't have any previous experiences (benchmarks). I've made all driver updates including latest 42 BIOS. OS is Win10 Pro clean install.

One thing I noticed are slow USB ports. I've tried system SSD to USB, USB to SSD, USB to USB, and the max seq write is 40 MB/s.

I checked/verified BIOS settings, set Power options to High performance, I even re-checked SSD and USB drives but they work fine and fast.

Does anyone have an idea what's wrong? What are your USB speeds?

      Regards,

      Thomas

Can someone try to copy a file few GB big using File Explorer, from external USB 3.0 drive to internal storage (desktop). What is your speed? Which BIOS version do you have?

Please I need this information ASAP to determine if there's something wrong with my NUC! I can still return it to the store...

            Hello tcaine,

Thank you for contacting Intel® NUCs communities.

I understand that you want to check the expected speed for USB 3.0 let me help you.
40 MB/s is the speed for USB 2.0, please make sure you are using the USB 3.0 located in the front of the NUC.

Let us know your system configuration as follows:

            SSD (make/model/size):
            USB devices:
            Other devices:

We recommend you to install the latest BIOS version available here
You can check how to do the BIOS update here.

Also try to complete a Windows Update.

            Regards,

              Transferring a 3GB file...

                   From Seagate Backup+ 4TB to the eMMC, I peaked at 108 MB/s and averaged 101 MB/s.

From (older) Western Digital MyPassport 2TB to eMMC, I peaked at 75 MB/s and averaged 70 MB/s.

Note: I have 10GB of memory and 2TB SSHD (for data) installed.

              Hope this helps,

                Hi, Scott!

Thanks for the test, as I suspected my speeds are too low. I was thinking maybe the latest v42 BIOS introduced this speed cap - on which version did you test the speeds?

                Regards,

                Thomas

                  Hi, Stephen!

I've tried with different fast (verified and working) SSDs, USB 3.0 thumb drives and portable disks, on all four USB ports.

I flashed the lastest v42 BIOS, Win10 Pro x64 was fully updated, all drivers from Intel support page installed, the works.

In my opinion, if this is not latest BIOS's bug, my NUC is defective.

                  Regards,

                  Thomas

                    Well, very interesting...

I was running on BIOS 41 when I ran the original tests. After upgrading to BIOS 42, my results varied considerably:

                         From Seagate Backup+ 4TB to the eMMC, I peaked at 40 MB/s and averaged 38 MB/s.

From (older) Western Digital MyPassport 2TB to eMMC, I peaked at 42 MB/s and averaged 40 MB/s.

Almost a 50% drop in USB performance. There is definitely something wrong in BIOS 42...

Is this on the NUC6CAYH or the NUC6CAYS?  The CAYS has 32GB of eMMC on-board which is slow storage, the CAYH has no on-board storage so it should be quite a bit faster if you are using an 2.5" SSD. I tried it on a CAYH with an older 2.5" SSD and was getting around 75MB a second when transferring a 5GB folder of files. This was on BIOS 0041.  On BIOS 0042, I saw the same file copy drop to 35MB a second.  Looks like there is an issue in this latest BIOS.

Their testing was on the NUC6CAYH while mine was on the NUC6CAYS. Still, after just a BIOS change, 101 MB/s down to 38 MB/s and 70 MB/s down to 40 MB/s are significant drops.

                          So my suspicions were correct.

The problem is we cannot downgrade the BIOS: "Due to a security enhancement, it will not be possible to go to any BIOS earlier than BIOS 0042"

I'll inform Intel Customer Support about two more users with the same problem.

Hi there. After the latest BIOS update i did i have the same USB 3.0 port issues as you do. Read my post if you like. Hope they figure this out ...

My entry:  NUC6CAYH: First screen flickering with HDMI, now USB 3.0 ports do only USB 2.0 speed !

It's definitely a thing with this BIOS. I've also noticed random flickering on two AOC 27'' FullHD over HDMI. But then there was no flickering on Acer 2k and Samsung FullHD TV, both over HDMI.

May I suggest you to open a support ticket? They are killing me with questions about USB speed issue almost suggesting there's something wrong with MY system setup and testing capabilities when there's obviously a NUC-BIOS issue...

Intel is aware of the USB issue and has reproduced it in their lab. Their BIOS folks will be looking into it. A fix should be in the next BIOS release.

A user reported that they found that Windows had set the refresh rate to a wonky value. After setting this properly, they stopped seeing the flashing blank screens. I suggest you also look to see if this is set correctly for your monitor - and let us know, regardless.

                                Hope this helps,

P.S. Please do not describe this as flickering. Flickering is a totally different phenomenon that occurs constantly. This is a (seemingly randomly-timed) flashing blank screen.

They have broken intel nuc with bios 0042.

I want a solution or a change of equipment, this is incredible.
