You can try using the l2tp package found here http://repo.opkg.net/edison/repo/core2-32/ . L2tp will allow you to configure a VPN setup on your board. Also take a look at this link https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/L2TP/IPsec_VPN_client_setup . Under the xl2tpd you will find the steps needed to configure your board. Let me know if this helps.
I was able to connect my Edison to a vpn. However I used openconnect. I tried to use L2TP but it got a bit confusing to set up. Here is what I did:
1) Download the package and install it.
wget ftp://ftp.infradead.org/pub/openconnect/openconnect-7.06.tar.gz && tar xvf openconnect-7.06.tar.gz && cd openconnect-7.06 && ./configure --with-vpnc-script=/etc/vpnc/vpnc-script && make && make install
2) Create the vpnc directory in /etc/
3) Create the vpnc-script, with nano if you have installed. ctrl+x, yes, save.
4) Run this line to prevent some errors
chmod u+x /etc/vpnc/vpnc-script
5) Connect to vpn
openconnect -s /etc/vpnc/vpnc-script vpn.myschool.edu
Replace vpn.myschool.edu with the vpn server of your choice
I hope this helps. .
