150. Re: Intel SSD 530 startup problems - Bug in SSD?
parsec Dec 23, 2013 7:38 PM (in response to niklas)I use a 530 SSD as a Windows 8 OS drive, which came with the DC12 firmware, and have not had any restart or boot problems. That is on a ASRock Z87 board with an EFI booting Windows 8 installation.
I have had some minor recognition issues with the 530, but nothing that is any problem. The "System Browser" utility available in the board's UEFI/BIOS, will display all the active drives in the PC. The 530 with the DC12 firmware would not appear in that list of drives. It also was sporadically detected in the main Storage Configuration option in the UEFI. Otherwise the PC booted Windows from the 530 just fine, and the Intel RAID utility option that is supported in my board's UEFI would recognize the 530 fine. The DC32 firmware seems to have fixed the small detection issues I described above.
While I'm glad the 530 owners that had detection issues no longer have that with the DC32 firmware, the fix seems to be an example of what must be done to insure compatibility across widely varying PC systems. That is, the fix for the issue in this thread in firmware DC32, "Default Software Settings Preservation (SSP) for DIPM is changed from a default = on, to a DEFAULT = OFF" is possibly a compromise to accommodate those other systems.
I may be wrong about that, and I understand why this was done, but other users of the 530 may be losing a feature in order to enhance the SSD's compatibility. Just an observation.

Srv-02 Dec 25, 2013 1:19 PM (in response to ken-Intel)Hi ken-Intel!
I have a ASUS Z87-EXPERT Mainboard with a Intel 530 240GB SSD and even with the latest DC32 Firmware the SSD is not recognized in UEFI/BIOS. I loaded the defaults several times but it didn't help anyway.
I already tried two different Intel 530 240GB SSDs, but both didn't work. I only hat success once - right after i updated the BIOS to the latest Version the SSD showed up, but i couldn't remember which Firmware it had then. Maybe it was DC12 (Stock Firmware Image).
I'd be glad if you can help me asap, because my newly built Chrismas-Computer isn't working.
Thanks in advance.

152. Re: Intel SSD 530 startup problems - Bug in SSD?
lbna69 Dec 29, 2013 4:06 PM (in response to ken-Intel)hello Sir,
I have installed 530 Series 240 GB disk in HP Probook 470 G1 with latest BIOS (1.05) . I had issues with cold restart as others in this thread, but I also experienced random 5-10s freezes of the disk - the system didn't respond and disk indicator was constantly on, otherwise the system was responsive and fast. This happened every few minutes. After fw upgrade the freezing problem escelated to every few seconds so the computer is practically unusable. The disk works fine in other machines and this computer works fine with Intel X25-M 120 GB SSD drive.
I installed all apdates, uninstall 3D Driveguard...
Diagnostic test in SSD toolbox passed also.
Please respond!
Thanks and BR
Andrej

niklaskog Jan 2, 2014 4:42 AM (in response to ken-Intel)Hi. Thank you for the firmware update. After updating the 530series 240GB to firmware DC32 on a HP Zbook 15 on Windows 7 64 Bit Enterprise, the disk is finally being detected after warm reboot.
However the disk response time per task when system is idle is unusually high for an SSD viewed in Resource monitor as observed before and after the FW update. The values detected on different system tasks are svchost (localservicenetworkrestricted) 167ms , svshost (netsvcs) 85ms, system (mft) 80-160ms, repository 166ms.
(1-5 sec random unresponsiveness was previously observerd before the FW update)
This behavior does not seem to be affected during disk usage, like during a benchmark.

154. Re: Intel SSD 530 startup problems - Bug in SSD?
JB24 Jan 2, 2014 8:10 PM (in response to niklaskog)I created an Intel Communities account specifically because of your post.
I have an Intel SSD 335 240GB which has been great, but I was running out of space and decided to get a another SSD for games. I settled on two Intel SSD 530s 240GB (one to replace the 335, which I'd repurpose, and another for more storage) and installed them over the holidays.
I installed the OS on the first 530, and some games on the second 530. After I fired up some games I immediately noticed intermittent stuttering during disk reads, which manifested itself as lag in games. It wasn't constant, but it was enough to be quite noticeable and annoying. I copied the same games to the first 530 and experienced the same issue. The 335 does NOT have this issue (even after reinstalling the OS).
I fired up SysInternal's PerfMon and verified that some reads were occasionally taking 166-167ms on the 530s. What I found interesting is that it was always 166-167ms when the issue manifested itself, and now I've found someone else reporting the exact same issue and the exact same access times. That can't be a coincidence.
I tried swapping SATA cables, ports, power cables, drivers, etc. I trimmed the drives and verified the alignment was correct. Nothing made a difference. I came to the conclusion that the 530's firmware (DC32) must have an underlying issue.
I bought a Samsung 840 EVO 500GB to replace the Intel 530s and the issue is gone. The highest access times I've seen with the Samsung have been around 15ms, and they are usually less than 1ms.
So... I'm returning the Intel 530s. I really wanted the reliability and QC of Intel's SSDs, but I don't have the patience to wait for this issue to get resolved.

fnj1017 Jan 2, 2014 11:31 PM (in response to JB24)Same problem on 8470p..
At first I thought it was the problem with my new mouse.
System will be stuttering even when I was doing nothing but just moving mouse on the desktop... encounter this several times a day, quite annoying..

157. Re: Intel SSD 530 startup problems - Bug in SSD?
cposs Jan 6, 2014 10:00 PM (in response to ken-Intel)I am trying to install Windows 8.1 on a 240 GB 530 in my Asus Zenbook UX302LA. The disk is only recognized by the installer on a cold boot, but when it does see the disk the installer refuses to modify it (no formatting, no deleting of the current partitions). If I run the disk rescan function in the installer the 530 then disappears from the list and only comes back after a cold boot. I updated the drive to the latest firmware (using the bootable Firmware Update Tool in this same computer), and the installer still can't use it. I also tried loading the latest chipset driver for my computer in the Windows installer, and after the driver loads the 530 has disappeared from the list of disks. My BIOS has also been upgraded to the latest version (207).
If I put the drive in an external USB enclosure I can partition and write to it with no problems from my original HDD Windows installation. It is also recognized with no problems by an older laptop I have.

icebits Jan 8, 2014 3:56 AM (in response to niklas)Update to latest firmware DC32, no luck for my Asus M4A87TD/USB3 motherboard (latest firmware Apr-2011). Start PC cannot detect by BIOS, need to unplug cable and plug-in again after 30mins in order to work. Shutdown PC > 5mins will become undetected again.
Any help will be appreciated. Thanks.

Gatecrasher Jan 22, 2014 1:01 PM (in response to niklas)I am experiencing the same problem as everyone here with my new Intel 530 240GB SSD in my HP 9470m laptop.
I was able to install and login into Windows 7 Pro using the IDE workaround. I was going to install the Intel toolbox firmware update however in the toolbox software it says "Your system is in IDE mode. The selected Intel SSD cannot be updated with the Intel SSD Toolbox in this mode." Well when I change my bios from IDE to ACHI my system will crash every time it is loading Windows (right at the windows loading screen).
Not sure how I can update the firmware at this point in I can't log into Windows with ACHI. -

kopfwurst Feb 18, 2014 1:30 PM (in response to goeeayu)Hi,
same problem with firmware DC12 and DC32 with Asus H87 Pro Rev 0.
I have to switch the power off/on so a restart is possible.
And today, an SSD has been disconnected during operation:
"Ata4.00: failed command: WRITE FPDMA QUEUED"
Unbelievable how this product could come in trade, go back to the dealer tomorrow.
