I'm looking for answers about my CPU and motherboard temperatures as I just finished over clocking my i7 2600k 3.40GHz to 5.60GHz. I was expecting my CPU temps to dramatically increase from 28°c but instead it barely when up too 32°c (which is no hotter then the room I'm running the PC in). However my board is showing an unusual increase from a relatively cool 30°c to a dramatic spike up to 48°c. But come right back down to 32°c when the side penal is removed.
The 3 case fans are running 100% with front door open and yet I only have my CPU cooler idling at 900rpm to get these results.
These figure are baffling me as they seem so unreal that I can get them with my CPU cooler running as slow as it will go. These temps have been confirmed through both AI Suite II and an external digital thermometer with contact pads.
Any explanation would be greatly appreciated.
My system build is this:
- NZXT H2 Black Mid Tower
- ASUS P8Z77-V XL Mother board
- Intel Core i7-2600k 3.40GHz 8MB Cache
- SpinQ VT Vertical CPU Cooling Tower
- 2 x Sapphire Radeon HD 6770 Crossfire linked
- Kingston HyperX blu 16GB Quad DDR3 1600Mhz Memory, 4 x 4GB
- Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit

Though it is quite strikingly attractive to look at and worked sufficiently well at cooling my cores even when they're overclocked well over the recommended trash-hold, the centrifugal fan design had one big flaw that should have been obvious to me when I was buying it.
Ever since it's a centrifugal fan design it blows the air off its heat-sink in an array of air in a 360° fashion. Thus meaning it was blowing the hot air everywhere in my case coursing a back pressure towards my stack of 8 2bt hard-drives making a large bed of hot air between the air coming in from the front fans over my 8 hot hard-drives and it all being pushed over and getting trapped under to all my expansion cards (2 x Sapphire Radeon HD 6770 Crossfire linked, USB3.0 express card, RAID hard-drive back-up system card and a wireless N solution card)
My solution is pretty obvious. I've installed a 120mm Revoltec AirGuard RL039 to the bottom of my NZXT H2 case to draw cool air into the case and push that air up over the motherboard and I've installed a 140mm Revoltec AirGuard RL060 at the top to help exhaust the air out of the case. Most importantly I've swapped out my SpinQ-VT CPU cooler for a Cooler Master X6 Elite CPU Cooler in push-pull configuration.
Surprisingly the rig is still very quiet even with the extra fans.
If you read my description it clearly states that "These temps have been confirmed through both AI Suite II and an external digital thermometer with contact pads." I'm very particular with how I do my clocking and testing. I don't trust any of the stress test software so what I do is ever since I'm an architectural designer and structural engineer I have some high load software like Autodesk Maya. and so I take one of my complex workpieces and get my PC's to render it in the highest quality and let it crunch numbers for an hour. This rig is just a baby rig for my home theater hence why I want a quiet build but I also like to use it for Dawn of War LAN parties with my mates, cause well my work rig is well how one would say it... Not going to fit in my car.
So I was asking not cause it was a problem, but just because it was and sort of still is confusing as I would have expected much higher temps particularly with an air cooled system.
P.S. Never had a blue screen.
No worries, I wasnt implying whether your system was stable or not, 5.6ghz is a very high overclock for that cooler & rather unrealistic to run daily in a heavy cpu load environment.
You should also use a program such as Core Temp to get your actual cpu temp as AI suite II is known to report upto 20ºc lower than actual temps compared to other programs as it takes it's data from a different sensor on the cpu, a quick google search on AI suite II reliability will confirm this. HWMonitor or AI Suite II for accurate temps?
Also if you look at this MASSIVE cpu overclock spreadsheet put together by the overclock.net community you will see that people with much more expensive coolers are getting much higher temps than you are with 600mhz lower OC's, now that also doesnt make much sense with your results, either your temp readings are wrong or something else is. http://www.overclock.net/t/968053/official-the-sandy-stable-club-guides-voltages-temps-bios-templates-inc-spreadsheet
You also did not mention in your first post that you only run maya as a stress test, if you used an actual stress-testing program to test your cpu along with a more reliable cpu monitoring program your temps may be higher still.
Hopefully some of those links help with answering your questions, you must also be running a very high vcore to attain 5.6ghz with only an air cooler which would make me worry about cpu degradation aswell. Anything over the maximum intel spec of 1.52v for the 2600k would be likely to damage the cpu. http://communities.intel.com/thread/26156

71ºc under load with only 4.7ghz using the same CPU.
It not like I do my work on this PC. It's tiny. Hence the reason its for my home theater. I virtually only watch movies on it.
I do have core temp but its virtually useless as it's always telling me that my cores are at 140-145°c witch doesn't take half a brain to realize that is wrong. Purely because if that were the case my H2 would be venting black smoke not cool air. Plus it was saying my cores were at 80°c when I first built this rig and everything was stock then.
But really the only issue I really had was the fact that my board was getting too hot. thanks to the CPU cooler causing back pressure to my HHD and expansion cards.
I get a satisfaction out the fact that you are doing your research unlike most. But the fact remains that I tested it with an external digital thermometer with contact pads and got the same temps as I did with AI Suit II "with in a 5%-10% variation" so I will remain trusting AI Suit II.

And yes. My case is over kill for my motherboard but I didn't pay for it so I don't care.
Nice rig, I don't think the case is overkill at all, if I could afford it I would get the most expensive case possible to fit my needs since it's one of those things you can keep through multiple builds, your WCing setup is damn nice too. Later versions of coretemp are very accurate for me with my current build although I'm obviously on a much tighter budget.

I get idle temps of 24-31ºc at the desktop with load temps of under 50ºc while gaming,, stresstesting with prime95 or IBT hit 56ºc, my results line up with other people on OCAU.com (australia's largest overclocking community) & there is a dedicated thread for overclocking results with 2500k/2600k/2700k cpu's, with nobody achieving higher than 5.2ghz, without watercooling & 5.56ghz is the highest OC so far, nobody seems to be using over 4.6ghz as a daily overclock(as the temps & voltages would be too high causing cpu degradation).

Anyways nice meeting you, I guess if your 2600k system is running fine at that clock it's all that matters, I would still suggest asking around on some overclocking forums and confirm whether your readings are accurate or not as it would be a hassle replacing the cpu if your temp readings are off, even if money is not an issue.
Another possibility you can test is try keeping a program that monitors your cpu speed like CPUID open and then run your usual programs such as maya and see what speed the cpu is running at, there is a chance that if your cpu was actually getting to hot that thermal throttling is engaging, which would downclock the cpu and reduce temperatures to stop the processor frying itself, which would also explain your unusually low temps at such a high OC of 5.6ghz.
I'm not rich, My boss payed for my CaseLabs STH10 build cause I needed it for work. But I work at home mostly so it's setup in my office , which is the room I'm suppose to be in but I busy killing in BattleField 3 on the 360.
I love your board!! And the GTX 670 X3 is a nice card are you using an Eyefinity setup with it??
What pressure configuration are you making with you case fans?? I'm assuming your pushing the air out of your case through the Rad at the top. Are you using gelid wing fans throughout your whole rig??
Only where they will fit, unfortunately they don't make them in a 200mm size but yeah I'm using as many as I can , the case has ALOT of airflow considering the size.
Fan setup is;
Front Intake Thermaltake 200mm
Front Intake Gelid Wing 120mm(above using a HDD bay adapter)
Bottom middle intake gelid 120mm
Thermaltake 200mm intake side panel
4 x 4 gelid wing 120mm on radiator top exhaust
rear 140mm gelid wing exhaust
They all glow with a nice UV effect but I'd really like to get some 200mm UV fans to match, problem is they are about $40 overseas and no local stock in aus
I can look into getting 200mm for you here in Australia if you like.
For my H2 I've got:
- 2 x stock NZXT low RPM 120mm's at the front, but their pretty much just for keeping my 8 x 2tb Western Digital Black Caviar HDD's that archive all movies, music and photos cool.
- 1 x 120mm Revoltec AirGuard at the back moving air out of course
- 1 x 120mm Revoltec AirGuard at the bottom drawing air in
- 1 x 140mm Revoltec AirGuard at the top again movie air out.
The STH10 on the other hand. I went little over kill.
- 4 x 120mm Corsair Air Series AF120 Performance Edition and 1 x Corsair Air Series SP120 Performance Edition (for my HDD bracket) at the front drawing in air
- 16 x Corsair Air Series SP140 Performance Edition for my 2 560mm x 140mm radiators at the top exhausting air and 3 x Corsair Air Series AF120 Performance Edition exhausting air from the center up into the top Rad compartment
- 8 x Corsair Air Series SP120 Performance Edition for my 2 x 240mm x 120mm radiators at the bottom exhausting air and 3 x Corsair Air Series AF120 Performance Edition exhausting air from the center down into the bottom Rad compartment with my 2 PSU's
- 6 x Corsair Air Series AF120 Performance Edition on radiator brackets over the top of my motherboard drawing air in from the vents in the side door
- 1 x Corsair Air Series AF120 Performance Edition on the back drawing air in.
And I think that's about it... Yep, that is all of them.
