I have a question about Mobile Intel chipset specifically HM67 (laptop). In his description you write that does not support virtualization VT-x and VT-D (http://ark.intel.com/products/52809/Intel-BD82HM67-PCH). The processor that I have (i7-2760) both technologies supports, BIOS as well too. It is true that both technologies must fully support the CPU, chipset and BIOS or they will be completely useless? Or when that the chipset does not support it, is just the functionality of both technologies only limited, but still working? If true what are the limitations? Is possible to get with this configuration hardware virtualization even I/O (VGA) passthrough?
Hi, I want to try the experimental VGA passthrough on this laptop. There has to be fully functional I/O virtualization (vt-d). I can not figure out this configuration fully supports it, ark intel says no. On the other side friend of mine says yes, even cpu support is enough. I am confused.
To use Intel Vt-d you need processor that support VT-d _AND_ chipset that support VT-d _AND_ motherboard BIOS that support Vt-d. If you wish to use VT-d you should find motherboard that have VT-d option in BIOS and have correct DMAR table. Some motherboards such as Asus and Gigabyte build on chipsets that supports VT-d but their BIOS don’t have VT-d support. You can find more detailed information at http://wiki.xen.org/wiki/VTd_HowTo
You can find the processors that support VT-d here http://ark.intel.com/search/advanced?VTD=true
To passthrough video is most difficult thing because video cards have its own BIOS.
It is also good to know that you can’t passthrough your primary video card. You must have at least two video cards in you system. You asked about laptop, so in your case you can’t passthrough video to your VM.
You can passthrough your primary video card.
I've done this with Xen 4.1.3 as hypervisor with Debian Wheezy as dom0 passing-though an i7-3770 integrated GPU (HD4000) to a Windows 8 domU with no other GPU whatsoever. It should be noticed that in these situations you'll loose video output from the dom0 and will be to control it via SSH from another machine. For reference: Linux/BSD: sharing experiences: HowTo: Xen 4.1.3 Windows 8 HVM domU with Intel HD4000 VGA Passthrough on Debian Wheezy.
Intel iGPUs are very passthrough friendly as well as AMD's FIREGL and NVIDIA's QUADRO professional series. Outside of the professional series there are several reports stating difficulties with NVIDIA GeForce series. There are however tons of successful report on AMD Radeon passthrough - I for one passed a Radeon 5450 as secondary graphics card.
