Intel Desktop Board DZ77BH-55K front-panel USB doesn't work properly on both boards purchased

    prospero424

Recently a friend and I both purchased one of these boards, only to discover that we had a problem in common.  We have different computer cases, but the front-panel USB 3.0 ports don't work at all when connected to the front panel header on the motherboard.  It does power devices plugged in, but nothing plugged in shows up in Windows 7 x64 or shows any indication of being detected. Additionally, the front-panel USB 2.0 ports exhibit problems [Edit: fixed].  They seem to work properly with some devices, but not others.  For example: an XBox 360 controller works fine, but no USB storage devices that we've tried (thumb drivers, external hard drives, etc.) will mount their storage volumes within Windows.

Everything works fine when connected to the USB ports on the rear panel.

Windows is up to date, the BIOS is up to date and all USB ports are enabled within the BIOS settings.  All latest drivers installed from Intel's download page for this board.  No bangs or missing drivers in Windows Device Manager.

Anyone else with this board experiencing similar problems?  Does anyone actually have the front panel USB 3.0 headers working properly for them?

Double Check that you have the latest BIOS. I was having similar issues with my DH77EB board. I thought that I had the latest BIOS and then realized that I didn't. Upgrading to the latest BIOS fixed the front panel USB issues.

I do have the latest BIOS.  It's actually easy to tell 'cause there's only two BIOS release for this board.  The old one doesn't have the Intel Visual BIOS interface and the new one does.  Impossible to confuse them.  What I will try is flashing the BIOS again and loading all defaults.

Update: I just fixed the front-panel USB 2.0 ports by simply connecting them to a different header on the motherboard. I had them connected to USB FP header #3 for layout reasons.  Connected them to header #1 instead and now they work fine.  Unfortunately, there's only one USB 3.0 FP header so that's not an option for the main issue mentioned above.

The latest bios for my DH77EB is dated 4-26-12 and included a fix for "Updated USB 3.0 pin-outs.", which fixed my USB 3 Front Panel issue. The latest bios for the DZ77BH is dated 4-16 and does not have a fix for USB Pin-outs. I suspect that these boards are very similar at some low level and with any luck another BIOS update will fix your board.

Also, new USB 3 driver was posted, I would try that as well.

                Hi

I have this board but not used the header for USB 3 on the motherboard.

The header on the motherboard is driven by the Renesys chip and the latest drivers are for the Intel USB 3.0 which is built into the chipset so I'd be surprised if it makes a difference.

It sounds like possibly there is a BIOS glitch that will be fixed by the latest firmware given the comments in the 70K board release notes, as you say they are essentially the same board.

                Regards

I have similar problem with DZ77GA-70K i cant use front panel USB 3 port because i get errors that usb device exceeded power... but the USB 3 HDD is fine. Same thing happens when i conect a USB 2 HDD in that port. 2 USB 2.0 front ports works fine tho. Also all rear USB 3 ports works fine. I have the front USB 2.0 ports connected to the yellow header, i think it was labeled.

Should note that the devices connected to front USB 3 port does power up but not showing up in windows. So they do get power.

I have already bios 0039 which supposedly has a front usb fix. I still hope it is not a hardware issue and that it can be fixed.

                    Hi

It sounds almost like a mis-wired or bad USB 3 socket, there may be a few of these in the supply chain as it is a new specification and maybe a batch from China are wired wrong?  Is your mis-functioning USB 3 port built into the your case?  The sockets should be blue.  If you have a back-plate included from Intel can you try that on the header temporarily to see if it works?

                    Regards

It is built in, the blue port and in the other end it has 20 holes that i connect to the 19 pin headers on the mobo. Tried both USB 3 headers. But the front port was working properly on my ASUS board. So i'm not sure its the port. I will have to go to basement and get that Intel USB 3 bracket. Then i can see if it is the header on the mobo that is faulty.

My case is a Fractal Design Define R3 USB 3-0 made in Sweden but i don't know if the USB thing is made in China.

Lets hope we solve our issues.

Just to add: I do *not* get any errors or power surge warnings when attempting to use mine.  The front-panel connectors on my Corsair Obsidian 650D case terminate in actual (male) USB connectors, which then either plug into a front-panel-header adapter or pass through to the USB ports on the rear panel.  They work fine when passed through to the rear panel, but not when connected to the header adapter.  But my friend who is having the same problem has a case where the front-panel USB 3 ports are connected directly to the front panel header and it exhibits the same symptoms.

I double checked and yes, I too get power from the header, but no data connection at all.

It could very well be an electrical problem with a run of boards.  I'm just hoping for a BIOS update in the near future 'cause RMAing this thing would be a giant pain in the ****.

I have the same case with my DH77EB and I had the exact same issue with a power surge error until I upgraded to the latest firmware for my motherboard. The firmware release notes included a entry for "updated USB 3 pin-outs" and was dated 4-26-2012.

Before I updated the firmware, two Fractal Design front panel assemblies did not work,  A borrowed Asus front panel assembly worked properly. I even verified every connection on the 2nd  Fractal Design front panel assembly and everything was correct. I guess that the motherboard was getting confused when only 1 of the 2 USB 3 ports was being used. Overall it is one of the strangest PC issues that I have ever seen.

Also, note that the Intel USB 3 driver was recently updated.

Good that you also have a "Fractal Design R3" and had same issue that got fixed by BIOS udpdate. That gives me hope that a bios update will solve it for me too. But in release notes for 0039 bios for DZ77GA-70K it shows: "Fixed issue with front USB port" but im not sure its the same fix as for your board since you wrote "updated USB 3 pin-outs". If that is the same fix and since it has not solved my problem i am maybe out of luck.

Let's hope that all issues i have is BIOS/Software related and not hardware related. I don't wat to RMA anything. Have already RMA'd 3 components several weeks ago and i have headaches from it.

Edit: Chatted to Intel tech and asked about "Fixed issue with front USB port" that i found in the notes for 0039 bios for my board.

                            Answer:

Furthermore, the Fixed issue with front USB port

was that you got a yellow bang on device manager and the USB 3.0 port was running as if it were a USB 2.0,

therefore, the issue does not relate to the problem the motherboard was presenting.

From this it seems its not the same as yours "updated USB 3 pin-outs" update.

Maybe a future bios for my board will solve my issue then.

If the USB works on the back then maybe it is the hardware on the case.  If you connected a cable then it could be the cable or the connection on the case.  Of cours there could be some issue with the usb2/3 on the motherboard also.  I would find a way to verify this.  Or just try to RMA it.  However, if it is the case, you could be wasting your time.  Maybe you should also go the case manufacturers website and check out any possible issues there.  It would be a bummer to send back a motherboard and the problem not be fixed.  I am assuming you installed any possible chipset drivers.

As pointed out above: this problem manifests with this board on a number of cases of different make and manufacture.  I have personally tested it with three different cases and it does exactly the same thing on all of them.  At least in my case and that of the friend who purchased the same board, it is most definitely not a problem with the USB panel of the case.  It is either a physical/electrical flaw with the USB3 header on the motherboard, with the BIOS, with the Renesas drivers, or some combination of the above.

Since this board also has widespread compatibility problems with 8GB DIMMs from major manufacturers like Corsair and Crucial, I would hope that a major BIOS update or two would be forthcoming very soon.

Needless to say, I find the possibility that I will consider an Intel desktop board in the future to be very slim at this point.  I'm pretty sure that if I had bought an equivalent Gigabyte or Asus I wouldn't be having these problems.  In fact, having friends and co-workers who bought both this board and some from those manufacturers, I know I wouldn't be.
