        Aha! Announcement I just noticed:

Intel has identified an issue with the following BIOS versions, where the ability to overclock the system is not working after the BIOS update.

        BIOS ID

        BIOS version

        Boards

        BAP6710H.86A

        0077

        DP67BA, DP67DE

        BCZ6810H.86A

        0035

        DZ68BC

        DBZ6810H.86A

        0040

        DZ68DB

Intel regrets any inconvenience caused by this issue and is working to provide corrected BIOS versions as soon as possible.

So at least they've confirmed it is a known problem and they are working on it.

          Well Done 10c!

Now let's hope that the next BIOS update will come soon, will fix this issue and will provide us the ME 8.0 Firmware upgrade!

            Great, this is good news.

Contacted support again this afternoon (4/23/2012):

Adolfo: Ok this was escalated last Thursday, I was double checking and I was told that we will have an update before the end of tomorrow.

Unless they have something real to tell me tomorrow I'm sending this board back to them.

Please let us know if there are any news. In any case I am sure that in a later BIOS update the problem will be solved.

                  Hi guys ..

i am just contributing my expierence on this board..

i was runnign this board at 0032 for  quite a while.. running at 0032 is quite stable although this is some problem with the memory configuration in 0032.

few weeks back... i notice the bios 0040 is out and i flashed it.. however it failed with the bios screen stuck at "flashing memory initiation..." ...
my board went DEAD... pure dead.. USB no power.. my special Ballistix gen 1 ram show no activity..

contacted intel support via phone and have this motherboard RMAed..

today my board came back and i notice the replacement motherboard which intel send me is running under 0014..
i flashed it to 0032 for transition to 0040.... sadly...

till now i realise 0040 is a flawed bios update... event hough intel knew 0040 is a flawed update, they should removed the 0040 and issue an memo regarding about the update of bios 0040... quite disappointing..

running an 2500k on DZ68DB with my "Maximum Non-turbo ratio" stucked at "33" is not kidding...
Intel... Please... Enable Dunes Beach to be overclockable....

Ok guys here's the new word as of this morning, 4/26/2012. According to support this issue has been escalated to their "business unit" to see how they want to handle it and apparently that could mean it's a long wait for a solution.

I was able to get support to give me an RMA for my DZ68DB but only after the tech I was chatting with spoke to his manager. Incredibly, Intel doesn't do ARMAs so I'm out a motherboard for at least a week if not a little longer.

I'm still on the fence about whether or not that's worth it since I'm still bootable unlike some other users on this forum; but at least it's an option as opposed to waiting.

                      rsnelson

Push harder on the ARMA.   They may have changed policies but I was able to get one in September 2011 for this MB.  Of course the board they shipped me had the same exact problem as my original board -- they didn't believe me that the BIOS had issue detecting displays after BIOS upgrades.

                      • 23. Re: DZ68DB BIOS update 0040 breaks performance options for i5-2500k
                        aris1978

That's not good news at all!  Thank God I am still bootable too. Some Questions:

                        1) Does the problem occur to all "K" /Sandy Bridge CPUs or only on 2500K? Can somebody else tell us, who has a 2600K or similar and has performed the BIOS update?

                        2) Does it happen only to #AA 101 Revision boards or also to #AA 105 Boards, which are 22nm CPU ready?

                        10c

I also had a strange Problem, I was looking into the BIOS settings and withouth noticing I must have changed a setting somewhere, then  after booting a notification informed me that a problem persists due to a BIOS update or BIOS setting and gave me the option to fix it through the BIOS. After setting everything to default, the Board did boot normally.

Please Intel do fix this issue as soon as possible and give us a new BIOS update which resolves the problem. It would be nice if we had an official intel support statement.

@rnelson That's good advice; I'll definitely try that--otherwise I think I might not use the RMA at all.

@aris1978 The only time I've seen a BIOS notification like the one you're describing is when I have "USB Legacy Support" enabled (Onboard Devices -> USB) while my 2TB Seagate GoFlex disk is plugged in--that can sometimes cause a boot failure for me and it's enabled by default.

                            Thanks for noticing @10c!

In any case Intel should provide us a quick solution. This was a major BIOS update and this mess shouldn't happen at all.

                            EDIT: @10c

Give me your Overclocking settings. I will try that my self and see if I can verify the problem myself. Wich software are you using to check the cpu speeds?

@aris1978 From what I've tested it doesn't seem to matter how the OC settings are set; it will always result in the same default performance. The only settings I changed are as follows:

                              1. Go to BIOS "Performance" tab.

                              2. Accept the warning.

                              3. Go to "Processor Overrides", hit enter.

                              4. Set the "Ratio Limits" at the bottom to anything higher than the levels they are currently set (by default they are set to 4-34, 3-35, 2-36, 1-37)--although I don't recommend going over 43 for 4 cores. Personally I've gone to 44 without issues but at 45 I had some instability.

After saving and rebooting you can verify the speeds with Intel's Extreme Tuning Utility by running a short CPU stress test and watching the clock speeds. I've double-checked that result against Open Hardware Monitor, CPU-Z and RealTemp.

                                Thank you very much!

I will try that first thing tomorrow, since  I am not at home right now and report back here. Did you tweak any voltages, or burst wattage etc. ? I will set the ratio limit to 40-42 (is that OK?) instead of setting  higher ratio for each core separately, and run XTU for sure and maybe the other apps. After that I will try setting maximum ratio like the way you did.

I didn't tweak anything else. Just the ratio limits.

Edit: You should be fine in that range too (40-42).

Well, it's report time. I can verify myself that the Overclocking capabilities of DZ68DB are totally broken after the 0040 BIOS update.

                                    1) I set the max core ratio to 42 for all cores. I saved and restarted. Entered the BIOS again, and I could see that the setting was applied and saved correctly.

                                    2) I installed Intel XTU and Heavyload and performed two seperate performance tests.

                                    3) I checked the core speed during both tests with Intel XTU and Open Hardware Monitor. Intel XTU was stable at 3.39 and Open Hardware Monitor at 3.59, both for all four cores. No overclocking functionality, although the XTU system Information reported that the turbo boost was set to 42 for all four cores.

Intel we need a solution here!

EDIT: By the way, 10c, which management engine Driver have you installed? The 7.1.40 version or the 8.0 ?  Both are in the download center available.Could this be related to the problem?
