    Bad motherboard or processor?


      I'm no expert, but I'm pretty sure the cpu is bad. System build, almost all parts have previously been used.


      I have a DP43BF motherboard, Intel Core 2 Duo e8400, EVGA GeForce 7900 GTX graphics card, new 8GB (2x4GB) DDR3 RAM, and a new 400W PSU.


      After building, I turned it on for the first time and got three beeps in a row and it repeated. No boot or on-screen display, fan's turned on, hard drive churned, disk drives powered up, but the beeping continued.

      So I followed the steps listed on it, I unplugged virtually everything from the board, leaving only the PSU (24 pin and 2x2 pin), case power button, and CPU connected to it, and the beeping still continued. I have an older Pentium D processor, so I decided to plug that in place of the e8400 just for the heck of it. I then powered it up again and then no beeping, I didn't have anything else plugged into it yet, but it sounded normal. After a several seconds it restarted itself, then stayed on for a while. I didn't want to lit on for to long because heatsink and fans were disconnected, but it seemed like it worked. I then plugged the Core 2 in, and again, there was beeping. I had to get to work so I had to stop testing after that, but that would indicate to me that the e8400 is bad? I'll try again when I get home with the Pentium D and a monitor attached, to see if I get anything. I know the e8400 is supported by the DP43BF motherboard so that shouldn't be an issue.


      So are my findings correct? Are there any other tests I should try before I rule the e8400 the problem? Maybe the PSU is not enough, even thought I unplugged everything? Bad memory, even though it's brand new? Could I have messed up anything when putting it all together? Like I said, I'm no expert, I know about computers more than an average person, but I'm not a pro. Thanks for your help in advanced!

          Hi Chris - I am not an expert either and do not have your board but after a quick read of the tech spec for your board which can be found here, http://www.intel.com/support/motherboards/desktop/dp43bf/sb/CS-031271.htm?wapkw=tech spec dp43bf , I would suggest you check the new memory. The spec states max is 8GB using 2GB modules. The minimum recommended power for your board is 135W - 400 Watts is a lot more than you need although I am not sure if it would cause your problem. I would also compare the beep codes you are hearing with those defined in the spec. Good Luck. Peter

            A technical spec that I missed. All I read before was that it accepts 8GB of DDR3 memory, and I know that it's better to use less memory sticks. Didn't know each slot only accepts 2GB. I'll run a test for that, and if that's the case its much better than a bad processor. Just can't return the memory because I cut off the upc for a rebate

              So I tried new memory, 2GB DDR3 modules @ 1333MHz. I still have the same problem, 3 beeps looping. Could I be using the wrong memory?! The bus speed matches the motherboard, it's non-ECC, I don't see why it wouldn't work.

              From what I've found online 3 beeps mean a memory error or first 64K memory failure. It is very unlikely that this brand new memory that I tried is bad. I've been really careful with any static, I've check over and over all the connections and read over the motherboard guide repeatedly.


              Now I'm unsure if it's the motherboard, processor or memory. I'm just stuck...

                According to the release notes of the bios for the motherboard, the most recent one just added support for higher capacity modules. Is it possible to flash the bios without ram, or will I have to find a lone compatible ram stick to do it?

                  Have you tried using just 1 DIMM module in the first memory slot?

                  If that fails, you may need to get different/memory to flash unfortuantely.

                    Newegg shows the voltage as 1.65v. The spec for the board is 1.5v. I would recommend you test with one stick of RAM that meets the spec. Regards. Peter

                      Thanks for all your help. So, after long searches though other threads, I've found that this particular motherboard, when out of the box, is very picky with memory. People even had problems with memory that was said to be compatible with it by the manufacturer. There were people saying only 1GB sticks work, while others said only 2GB sticks at 1066Mhz worked, etc. So I did a compatibility check on Crucial's website figuring their compatibility database is updated, and bought a 1GB stick just to get the computer running. Got the memory, got the pc running, flashed the bios to the latest version. Now every single ram I've tested previously works with it, even the 4GB sticks I originally bought (Some places read that each slot only supported 2GB)!


                      I did another test. The specs of the board state that it only supports a maximum memory total of 8GB, but for the heck of it I install a 2GB in an available slot, booted up to the bios setup, and it looks like the bios reads the additional memory, reading 10240MB of total memory (2x4GB sticks, 1x2GB stick). Is this possible because of the bios update? Or do I risk damaging the motherboard/system?
