DH67GD / 0146 - Impossible to tweak memory timings !!!

I think I need to tweak the memory timings in the BIOS because 2x4GB (DIMM slots 1 & 2) has been running stable for over two months but 4x4GB (all slots) is randomly rebooting and freezing my system (see video). The memory itself has been tested thoroughly with MemTest86 and MemTest86+ so I am 95% sure it is not bad. If I change the memory settings from "Auto" to "Manual" in the BIOS, I no longer have video and need to use the BIOS configuration jumper to get back into the BIOS menu. Whatever manual memory settings I try (e.g. 1333mhz 9-9-9-24, 1066mhz 7-7-7-20, 1.50V, 1.55V, 1.60V, ...), I never have video. Also, when using the "Auto" settings, setting "Command Rate" (the bottom value) to 2T does not appear to have any effects because CPU-Z is still reporting 1T.

I would appreciate it if someone else who has a DH67xx board with BIOS 0142 and using onboard video, could toggle his/her memory timings from "Auto" to "Manual" and see if it affects the video output.

Intel DH67GD (with BIOS version 0146)

Intel i5 2500K

4 x Corsair 4GB (CMX8GX3M2A1333C9)

Crucial m4 128GB SSD

I decided to downgrade my BIOS from 0146 to 0132 and the "no video when ram settings are set to manual" problem is gone. Thank you Intel for yet another f*cked up BIOS version! I sometimes wonder if they even have a QA department.

    Hi,

I have exactly the same problem.

    I upgraded to BIOS 0146 from 0125.

    I have 4 DIMMS (4x4 GB) installed.

I order to have four DIMMS installed and working, I needed to tweak memory speed to 1066MHz. Otherwise I would get random reboots or the screen would freeze or be distorted after windows booted.

With 0146 it is not possible to tweak memory timings. If I change any memory timings , rebooting the system will only get me a black screen with the fans spinning.

In order to fix this black screen problem, I need to put the BIOS jumper into configure mode and reset the memory settings to automatic.

BIOS 0146 works with 2 DIMMS installed at 1333MHz.

    My CPU is Core i7 - 2600.

    No graphics card installed.

    A couple of SATA drives.

    No addon cards.

Windows 7 64-bit (all available windows updates)

    Latest drivers from Intel.

    I have the same problem

if you're googling and found this post and wondering whether to buy a DH67GD:

THE DH67GD IS AN AWFUL, UNSTABLE BOARD, in my expereince - DO NOT BUY ONE AT ANY PRICE! would be my advice.

From new, this board was unstable. After many hours changing settings (some months ago, so the post above wasn't around then to help me) I found that reducing the memory timings to 1066 level made things (mostly) better - just like the poster above - but it still crashed sometimes.

When it crashed, I'd sometims get graphics garbage - somtimes it would die while flooding the network with packets, which would effectively  take down the LAN due to collisions/flooded network. I tried separate graphics cards. I tried running with the bare minimum. Nothing made any difference.

I have 16GB corsair XMS3 memory which is tested to 1600MHz, in 4 sticks - I've tried one pair at a time- same problems.

When I saw 0146 bios, I hoped it would fix the (now occasional, since I reduced the memory timigs) instability I was seeikng with 0132.

Since 'upgrading' to 0146 it's basically made a  unstable board into a complete turrd. I can (mostly) get it to start but only with 'automatic' memory settings - when set to manual, the board powers on but the CPU fan never slows down (as per normal boot), and no video or any other apparent activity - so it's stopping pretty early on. Anytime the settings are anything other than 'Automatic' on the memory timings, just like the poster above, the board WILL NOT START WTIH 0146!!!

    Complete and utter rubbish.

With the memory settings to Automatic, It randomly resets, presumably due to the old memory timing problems seen with the previous bios where I had to slow the memory down - but that doesn't work now due to 0146 apparent bios bug.

When the settings are 'wrong' (i.e. anything other than 'Automatic'), the only way to get back to change the settings is to crawl on the floor again to move the stupid little jumper - 10 years ago, I had a mobo that you could hold some keyboard keys down to load defaults - but this motherboard is 'so advanced', it just wants to see me grovel in the dirt again.

When it did run for a while, I managed to run some benchmarks, and the windows 7 memory test. All checked out fine - and I thought I had somehow made progress - but then it returned to random resets.

I've tried downgrading the bios to 0132, but NOW I STILL HAVE THE SAME OR WORSE PROBLEMS!!!. When it ocasionally boots, it now bluescreens. It's possible that the constant crashing has caused disk corruption.

My advice to anyone who will listen is:

    1) DO NOT BUY THIS BOARD (or any similar board)

    2) IF YOU ALREADY BOUGHT THIS BOARD, DO NOT UPGRADE THE FIRMWARE - EVEN IF IT IS UNSTABLE NOW, IT WILL LIKELY GET  WORSE IF YOU DO!

    3) DOWNGRADING THE BIOS DOESN'T SEEM TO HELP!

if you have this board and have any trouble with it, take it out now, put it in the bin and buy a different (non intel) board - this time-vampire has already stolen many many hours of my life to try to get it working and with added bonus of frustration. Even if I only earned minimum wage, this board must have cost literally hundreds in wasted time and effort.

If you have not already bought this (or another) intel board, i suggest you do not buy it or anything like it or probably, don't buy an intel board at all. I used to trust intel boards - sure, they many not have been the  quickest, but they used to be reliable  - Now they can't even make a board that works! and from all the other posts, it seems I'm not the only one having problems with this board.

I will never buy an intel board again.

THIS IS THE WORST, MOST UNSTABLE BOARD I"VE EVER HAD THE MISFORTUNE TO PURCHSE!

I'm about to order a different (non-intel) board. Probably a Gigabyte, put the intel board in the bin and chalk this one up to 'experience'

    INTEL - Boo to you.

Just watched your video of your DH67GD crashing.

Sadly, I've seen EXACTLY that image many many times on my own DH67GD.

Like you, things did get better for me when I slowed the memory down - though I also got strange crashes with flooded network packets.

This looks like design faults with this board.

Thanks for posting the vid - I had meant to capture that myself.

My regeret is that I did't reject this board as not-fit-for-purpose right form the start.

I think I'm gonna try to get my money back, though I don't hold out much hope.

    best regards,

    Short update.

Having flashed back to 0132 (several times, and depsite this apprently not being supported according ot the docs supplied with 0146), the macine has at least stayed up over night.

I noticed that in 0146, the readme file states that manual memory timing adjustment is not possible - actaully, it seems you can adjust memory timings, at least you can set it to manual in the bios options i n0146, but for me, anything other than automatic fails. This seems true now in 0132 also, so although previously I had to set the memory timings to 1066 speed to get anything approaching stability, it seems this might have changed - though it's too early to say with this board given it's previous sporadic behaviour.

One further thing I noticed - don't know if this relates - but in automatic mode with 4 x 4GB Corsair XMS3 modules installed, the cmd timing setting (according to a memory tweaking tool) is set to 3T - but IIRC, the maximum selectable in manual mode from the bios was 2T? Maybe these boards have memory timing problems? would explain a lot...

It looks like Intel updated their readme file. The original release notes did not mention upgrading from 0132 or manual memory timings at all.

    1. If you are using a BIOS version older than version 0132, you must update to version 0132 before updating to version 0146.

Note: This BIOS version does not support manual (user-defined) memory timings. In the BIOS, ensure Performance > Memory Configuration is set to Automatic.

Nice of them to change the release notes after I've upgraded the BIOS!

So this board is totaly useless now.

What is the rationale for not being able to manually adjust memory timings!?

    Crappiest board ever.

People, if you need more than 8 GB of memory, stay away from Intel motherboards...

Despite what the release notes say, you actually can downgrade back to 0132. It might not downgrade everything but at least the manual memory timings issue is gone.

Not being able to specify manual memory timings (which apparently is necessary when using 4x4GB unless you want random reboots) is probably another f*ckup since it was documented post-release. IMHO they should have pulled the BIOS instead, not document the bugs, of which one turns the board into a brick!

I honestly don't understand how they can make so many f*ckups with the BIOS for this board. The two BIOS releases before 0132 were pulled due to brick-after-bios-update issues. This was the first and last time that I bought an Intel branded motherboard. Back to Gigabyte for me. The reason I decided to go Intel was to avoid situations like these. Never again.

BIOS version 0146 has been removed from Download Center.  This version  is no longer valid for the following Intel® Desktop  Boards: DH67BL,  DH67CF, DH67CL, DH67GD, and DH67VR.

It was discovered that when attempting to update to this version from a version earlier than 0132, the system may hang.

If you have this issue after updating to version 0146, update the BIOS to the latest available version on Download Center.

I was right, the quality of intel  is going down, for me I get the 0132 bios and I doubt much will change  and I think the next motherboard that I will buy, will be   asus or msi.  Intel never more.
