Unable to install any drivers for my Intel 6205 WiFi (Is it fake?)

Hi all,

This is my first post here, I would like some help regarding a newly bought WiFi card.

I have just bought a Intel Centrino Wireless-N 6205 WiFi card. The packaging and the labels all look correct, however its hardware ID contains an ID that is not present in any of the Intel drivers that I could find.

The code is VEN_8086&DEV_008A&SUBSYS_00008086

From the Intel driver's INF, it seems that VEN_8086 and DEV_008A usually refers to the Intel Wifi 1030 card. However, even so, none of the combination matches as the SUBSYS number is not the same.

My question is: Is this card simply too new, and therefore the drivers supposed to support it is not out yet? Or it is simply a fake card?

The laptop that I am trying to install it on is a Sony VAIO SB-series laptop (Sandy Bridge based; Windows 7 x64). I have also tried the same card on a Dell, but the PCI code shows up to be the same and thus drivers could not be installed.A screenshot showing the Hardware ID: http://farm6.static.flickr.com/5143/5597021622_85a4189615_o.png

Thanks in advance!

What is the other network controller in the system?

The  pci id VEN_8086&DEV_008A&SUBSYS_00008086 Is strange,

                                ^                ^                           ^

Intel product      N 1030 network adpt    OEM

    GENeric  1030_BGN wireless adpt.
    PCI\VEN_8086&DEV_008A&SUBSYS_53078086  or

    PCI\VEN_8086&DEV_008A&SUBSYS_53058086 ;

    Dell_1030_BGN

    PCI\VEN_8086&DEV_008A&SUBSYS_53278086

    PCI\VEN_8086&DEV_008A&SUBSYS_53258086

As you can see, the the driver package contains a custom version for the generic and for a DELL specific version.

Other OEM may post there own driver.

The 6205 should have an ID of PCI\VEN_8086&DEV_0082&SUBSYS_13018086

Since it appears to be the right driver, with the wrong device ID you could probleby do a force load and it would work, But I think I would just return it or try the warranty support line.

One of the network guys on here may have more info.

Those are my exact thoughts too! =)

Now negotiating a return of the product.
