Bruce, sorry for your troubles, however, I was able to perform an update using ROM-DOS with no issues using the package downloaded from Intel's support site http://downloadcenter.intel.com/Detail_Desc.aspx?agr=Y&DwnldID=19672 . I just made sure that there were no memory managers loaded during boot-up of ROM-DOS, since that may cause the update to fail.
Perhaps when you need to perform a BIOS update in the future, look at ROM-DOS as an option.
Hope this helps.
I'm stuck in the exactly same situation.
I try it with the freedos and the DOS update packate and after reading this post, with the IDA CD too and now at least I got this error:
ERROR: Current bios is not compatible to be updated to this packages.
Selecting the "Update from Intel" option I got this versions available:
COMPONENT Release in package Release on server BIOS 0098 0056 BMC 0.65 10.48 SDR 48 33
Release Date: 07/14/2006
BIOS REvision 3.0
After two weeks with this exact issue, I got my s5000psl updated.
I downloaded de DOS update Package at Download Center and created my USB Boot drive key following this tutorial step by step MS-DOS Bootable Flash Drive - Create - Windows 7 Help Forums
We got our server alive with this update (vmware esxi 5.1 compatible).
Hope this helps anyone
