DP45SG frequently freezes and sometimes reboots

    walter-e

Hi, this is another message about the problem with this board and DDR3 1333MHz ram. Does anyone found a solution? The two suggestions right now are using only the 2 blue dimms with 4GBs and if you have more than 4GBs, the ram should be changed to 1066MHz.

I have the latest bios update, 0125. My memory is KVR1333D3N9, 4 dimms of 2GBs.

...The third solution is change it for an ASUS P5P43TD

          Hi,

I confirm the Intel(R) Desktop Board DP45SG supports 1333/1066/800 MHz DDR3 SDRAM interface; hence, if you've tried with the latest BIOS at no avail, I'd then appreciate if you answered the following questions and included any additional relevant, helpful information:

          1- Detailed issue description:

2- Are you receiving an error message? If so, please provide the exact wording of the error message.

3- When did the issue first occur?

4- What system changes occurred, such as BIOS or operating system upgrade, new peripheral devices, etc.?

5- What other steps have you tried to correct the issue?

            1. The computer freezes suddenly, sometimes after 2 hours and some times after 2 minutes. Other times the computer suddenly reboots.

            2. There is no message or warning of any kind, the Event Viewer of Windows only says that the last shutdown was unexpected

            3. Since I built the computer last year, August 2009. After I updated the BIOS with the revision 0125, worked fine for 2 months and then started again to frezze.

            4. The only change until now is that I added the last dimm of 2GBs after a couple of months, I started with 6GBs on 3 dimms.

            5. I have tried installing all the updated drivers, bios, raid drivers. I work with Windows 7 64bits and Windows 2008 64bits. I tried with Live CDs from OpenSUSE and Ubuntu. I changed the dimms between them and one by one. I use IDCC to monitor the temperatures and the ram is between 31 and 34 when I use 1 dimm or 2 or 3 or 4. All the tests from IDCC work without problem. When the computer freezes the light from the mouse and keyboard turns off. I have 3 hard disks and 2 of them on raid 0. Processor Q9550.

I know the board it's supposed to support 1333Mhz, that's why I bought the Kingston memory because it says was tested on the board.

Thanks for you quick answer, and I hope there is a solution to this problem that a lot of people is having (there is another thread with 11 pages).

I don't want to use the memory on 1066 or change the board.

Since the problem is random, would you mind confirming what the Kingston* part# in use are?  Also, please, provide the make, model and wattage of the power supply being used.  Finally, please, include the Altered Assembly Number (AA #) of your board.

              Thx!

You say your mouse & Keyboard go off. Have you checked for intermitten loss of power IE Power supply . ?? How old is the PSU ,what kind,  what watt ??  Because this does'nt sound like a RAM problem??

                  This is the PSU http://www.antec.com/pdf/flyers/EarthWatts_650_flyer.pdf

                  This is the RAM http://www.valueram.com/datasheets/KVR1333D3N9K3_6G.pdf

I bought everything last year on July.

Since I made the first post, I let 4GBs on the 2 blue dimms of the board; hasn't been a freeze since then ....so, I'm still thinking is something about the RAM

Thanks for your answers, I will check the AA of the board

I checked and the power supply should be fine for the requirements of the Intel(R) Desktop Board DP45SG.  I do comment the Kingston* KVR1333D3N9K3 module doesn't show up as an officially tested one either on our website (Click here) or that of Kingston's (Click here).  Have you tried with memory from our lists?

I'm not 100% sure but I think with this board you have to populate either all four slots or just two . The Ram sounds useable DDR3-1333 10600. and you are sure it's not 10666. If so I would put four Ram sticks with matching sepcs. and see if that doesent fix your problem , These boards were very picky about having Matched sets of Ram.

I have 4 dimms of 2GBs, but I removed 2 as I said before, to have only 4GBs installed. According to the specs the ram is 10600, I don't know how can I be sure of this. The 4 dimms are the exactly same model, I bought a kit of 3 first and 1 dimm a month later.

On the Kingston's site, it's the 6th model showed there, 2GB 1333MHz DDR3 Non-ECC CL9 DIMM, I have 4 of those. The PDF I showed before It's a kit of three of those dimms. On Intel's site doesn't show this model, but also doesn't show any model tested for this size and speed: 2GBs 1333MHz. The only models tested for 2GBs, are 1066MHz and 800MHz.

Wasn't this configuration tested by Intel or by others? 8GBs at 1333MHz. Many people say with the ram configured manually to 1066MHz the problem get solved.

The SPD on the Ram module should set to run at 1333Mhz. You should not have to change anything in BIOS or anywhere else.

,kingston ram.pdfThe PDF I am going to attach is the same ram as you have the only difference is you bought a 3 pack inseed of a 2 pack.

Walt I have used the Kingston and Crucial with same specs with no problems.

Hi, so far hasn't been a single reboot. I'm using 2 dimms for a total of 4GB's. I'm thinking in:

                                1. Maybe this 2 dimms are ok and one of the other two has a problem

                                2. It's true one post on other discussion about the board has no problems with only two dimms on the blue slots.

I will change this pair with the other pair, again using only the blue slots, to check which possibility could be true.

                                  walter-e

Hi, as I said on the last post; I was using the other two dimms of 2GB's each and no reboot or freeze has occurred. I have worked several hours everyday without problems.

Based on my tests, I can assure the board doesn't have problems with two dimms on the blue slots. Now I will use the 4 dimms again, but setting the frequency to 1066Mhz even though the memory is of 1333Mhz; it's the only option I have because I don't want to buy more dimms if these ones are ok.

I will try another month and see what happens.

Hi Robert, I saw your post on this discussion http://communities.intel.com/message/106723 about increasing de voltage of the ram to 1.6. Is it safe to increase de voltage in this board, I don't know if was made for overclocking?

That will be a better solution than downclocking the ram to 1066Mhz. Thanks
