Transcript from the vPro and Windows 7* live chat

Here's the transcript of the questions and answers from the live chat that was held on April 28th.

G_erinur8aer(Q)I purchased a Dell Inspiron 530 approx 3 yrs ago with a Pixma MP210 AIO. A few months ago, I was having problems with spyware and my niece was helping me to clean it out. Unfortunately, she also deleted part of my ScanSoft SE 4. Now, of course when I the computer is first turned on and loading software I run into the problem of it not being able to load the software because it is incomplete. I run Windows XP Ver 2002 Svc Pk 3. How can I download whatever is necessary to have this run properly?
intel_ChrisP(A)Sorry you are having issues.  I'd recommend you contact Dell support for troubleshooting support. www.dell.com. Chris

G_636cycmwdd(Q)does intel IT use windows 7?
Intel_JohnG(A)This is a client based OS used by our end users.
intel_ChrisP(P)@G_636cycmwdd.  Learn more about Intel IT plans to adopt Win7 in this paper. chris http://download.intel.com/it/pdf/The_Value_of_PC_Refresh_with_Microsoft_Windows_7.pdf
G_fypn2wdfhm(Q)I have hear good things of vPro so I purchased a machine from HP that said it was vPro with windows 7
Intel_JohnG(A)Fantastic!

G_fypn2wdfhm(Q)I have hear good things of vPro so I purchased a machine from HP that said it was vPro with windows 7. No issue is that i want to utilize the vPro. I setup the AMT but i fear the processor is not vpro. I have the i5 750. Do i need both chipset/processor or what?
Intel_RyanJ(A)You can order a vPro system without AMT, you must order with AMT in order to use the AMT capability, to verify go into the BIOS and look for the AMT option.

G_fmp2syjyy2(Q)Is there a video that shows a laptop "calling for help" wirelessly with AMT that is unable to boot into the OS?  I'm wondering how that works if it is possible and would love to see a demo.
Intel_JanetG(A)Please view the video "3 Use Cases with Intel vPro Technology" at www.intel.com/IT/client.htm    In this video, Matt Bodin of Intel IT provides a demonstration of 3 use cases using Intel® vPro™ technology. The demos show how Intel vPro technology can be used 1) to upgrade solid state drive software, 2) to remotely upgrade an operating system, and 3) to perform a remote reset of an encryption password.     thanks, Janet

david(Q)what online resources are available to help me configure vpro on my systems?
Intel_MattR(A)There are several Quick Start Guides that are posted on the vPro Expert Center for activating vPro.  If you can elaborate on the ISV you are trying using with Intel Core vPro Processor, i can point you to a more specific resource.
Intel_MattB(A)You could go to the Intel communities’ website – there is a great AMT demystified page

G_fypn2wdfhm(Q)The machine has AMT because I was able to access it but I dont think the processor on the machine is a vpro processor. Do i need to have a vpro processor to utilize AMT capabilities??
Intel_DanB(A)Yes, you need to have a processor that supports vPro for AMT to work corectly.

G_s6u6x4whby(Q)can you tell me the costs and benefits of implementing vpro?
Intel_JanetG(A)Take a look at the white paper "Implementing Intel vPro Technology to Drive Down Client Management Costs".   http://download.intel.com/it/pdf/Implementing_Intel_vPro_Technology.pdf  - thanks, Janet

anon(Q)how does vpro prevent security issues? it seems like there could be new ways for system attacks
Intel_RyanJ(A)vPro uses Certificates, there are 4 pre-loaded certificates on vPro AMT systems, you will order an matching certificate from a domain register for the AMT Provisioning.

G_636cycmwdd(Q)Has vPro been optimized to run in Win7 and what are the functions I can use?
Intel_DanB(A)Intel vPro clients do run great with Win7.  For one thing, you can utilize vPro to help deploy Win7 in your environment.  All the vPro functionality including AMT, TXT, VT-x support Win7.  Take a look at the following white paper for detailed information.  http://download.intel.com/products/vpro/whitepaper/crossclient.pdf

G_hvfafxxsgy(Q)What's your position and direction on exotic computing architectures like optical computing, graphene, and spintronics?
Intel_JesusG(A)Intel is actively doing research in many of these areas.   To find more information on Intel's efforts, I recommend you visit http://www.intel.com and search for the term you are interested in.
G_fypn2wdfhm(Q)What is the differenace between Vpro Ready and vpro enabled??
Intel_MattB(A)A vPro ready system is a system that has the ability to activate and become the powerful machine that it can be(this means it can be AMT enabled, ready for system defense etc). A vPro enabled machine is a machine that has vPro turned on and has been provisioned for certain capabilities like AMT or system defense.

G_kjgfebmsdh(Q)Does Power Management support Vpro for power ons or just Wol?
Intel_MattR(A)Intel Core vPro support both AMT power control (which is a secure and reliable packet) and traditional WOL

G_kjgfebmsdh(Q)Can Power Management "wake up" a machine that is in Standby?
Intel_mohanv(A)If you provision a vPro machine you can wake up the machine even from a complete shut down state in a very secure manner that includes Standby state also.
G_eexwby978u(Q)Understanding some hardware limitations, should the task really be reporting successful if it can't detect the machine was turned on?
Intel_MattB(A)Can you clarify your question please? In general the management console can detect if a machine was turned on.

G_s6u6x4whby(Q)can you tell me the costs and benefits of implementing vpro?
Intel_DanB(A)The cost of implementing varies depending on your requirements and environment.  The benefits include better saturation of off-hours patch/software deployments, great power efficiency and the ability to resolve problems remotely without having to send someone to the computer.

G_fypn2wdfhm(Q)Where does AMT come from? Is it the Motherboard, Serveral components, or other?
Intel_DanB(A)AMT is based on the combination of the chipset, network adapter and processor.

G_5r5jtg5xfy(Q)hi
Intel_JesusG(A)Hi, do you have a question I can answer for you?

G_5r5jtg5xfy(Q)to MattB - do you use vPro to support Intel?
Intel_MattB(A)Yes we do have vPro within Intel and utilize it in support scenarios.

G_fmp2syjyy2(Q)Is there a video that shows a laptop "calling for help" wirelessly with AMT that is unable to boot into the OS?  I'm wondering how that works if it is possible and would love to see a demo.
Intel_DanB(A)We don't have a video posted online at this time, but the new 2010 Core vPro platforms do support Fast Call for Help over wireless even if the OS will not boot.
G_fypn2wdfhm(Q)I know that other 3rd party software like landesk, MS, and such have their own way of utilizing vPro, is there anything offered independent of them that is free.
Intel_MattR(A)Well for starters, the vPro management engine does offer its own web interface on each client; within this web interface you can invoke a several of the core use cases.  The Intel AMT Developer Took Kit (http://software.intel.com/en-us/articles/download-the-latest-version-of-manageability-developer-tool-kit/) does provide an example console that you can build from.

G_fypn2wdfhm(Q)Yes, what new features for windows 7 and vpro can be utilized for remote support
Intel_DanB(A)One of the great new features we have is KVM remote control, which will give you full remote graphical access to a system no matter what the state of the OS is.  You can see an example of KVM remote control in action here:  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mcz4dK108uY

G_vyu4jba6yy(Q)I thought this was a "Live" chat?  I don't see my questions being answered.
Intel_MicheleG(A)What was your question? Would you repeat it? It is definitely a live chat. :-)

G_vyu4jba6yy(Q)to use RPAT my vendor says I need a MSPID and a AuthID that I get from Intel.  Anyone know more about this?
Intel_mohanv(A)

If you are end-user and would like to use Intel RPAT (Intel Remote PC Assist Technology) to get help from a service provider then you do not need MSPID or AuthID.  When the PC is booting up you press a key combination (Cntl+ALt+F1) that will put you into RPAT menu.  You can get help either on one term basis or you can sign up for serivce contract with one of service providers that registered with Intel.  To reiterate the answer, as an end user to utilize RPAT you would not need any of these IDs.

G_vyu4jba6yy(Q)Dell is only offering AMT4.  Why is RPAT only available in AMT6?
Intel_MattB(A)Dell offers several versions of AMT within their systems.  Here is a great link showing the versions available to you. RPAT also exists on AMT 5 systems as well.  http://communities.intel.com/docs/DOC-2033
