Intel and IBM have been working together for 15+ years to continuously improve enterprise solutions built on IBM information management software running on servers powered by Intel Xeon processors. Intel announced with IBM back in November last year at IBM’s Information On Demand conference benchmark results demonstrating impressive 88X performance gains in data query performance using IBM DB2 with BLU Acceleration running on the latest Intel® Xeon® processor E5 v2 family of microprocessors. I’m excited to report that our latest benchmark results are out for DB2 with BLU Acceleration running on the Intel Xeon processor E7 v2 family and they are better 148X performance gains over what we saw for DB2 on the Intel Xeon processor E7 family. In the testing, just upgrading the software from IBM DB2 10.1 to DB2 with BLU Acceleration gave a 77x speedup.
The performance improvements in DB2 with BLU Acceleration were not restricted to query speed. The database with 10 TB of raw data used in the testing was 4.55x smaller with DB2 with BLU Acceleration using actionable compression than the corresponding DB2 10.1 database with static compression (2,127 GB with actionable compression versus 9,687 GB with static compression).
All of this shapes up to much more than an incremental increase in performance. DB2 with BLU Acceleration paired with the Intel Xeon processor E7 v2 family of microprocessors is ideal for many demanding workloads ranging from heavy online transaction processing (OLTP) to quick in-memory analytics (OLAP).
