We all appreciate being able to stay connected when we are away from the office. Whether we are traveling for vacations, off-site meetings and other away-from-work excursions, we can still do so with a smile, serene in the knowledge that thanks to Wi-Fi hotspots, the Internet and e-mail are only a few clicks away. But beware - because not all are safe to use. Here are some precautions to take whenever you access public Wi-Fi that can keep your computer and its information safe from unwanted eyes.

IT@Intel: Exploring a Bring-Your-Own PC Employee Stipend at Intel

Intel IT investigated whether a stipend-funded program for bring-your-own (BYO) PCs could optimize the annual IT PC refresh budgets and encourage BYO PC program participation by offering increased platform choice for employees. In a survey of more than 5,000 Intel employees worldwide, 72 percent of respondents favored a stipend-funded PC supply model, but 40 percent of those interested did not want to be responsible for hardware support.

We concluded that at this time, a stipend model is not cost effective for Intel IT.

I completely agree that mobile workforce is a productive workforce. Personally, I can’t imagine not using a laptop to get my job done. I remember the days of sitting at a desk with my desktop PC and leaving it behind when I attended meetings, went to other office locations, or traveled for business. Fortunately, those days are long gone. With my laptop and my hand-held device, I can send and answer email, schedule and attend meetings, and basically do my job from anywhere.
