    Elizabeth,

       I didn't upgrade from 8.8.  Mine was a fresh install of Windows using the 8.9 setup disk drivers.  I was probably using an older version of the manager before I redid my Windows XP, but the problems began when I reinstalled Windows with the new 8.9 drivers, not before.

    Our system was also built with the v8.9 drivers straight off.

     

    One thing I have noticed is that a number of people with the problem have reported they have the same motherboard - the Asus P6T Delux v2. Perhaps worth you trying your test setup with this motherboard, if you haven't already?

    The one other motherboard that was mentioned by a few users was the Intel(R) DX58SO and we have tried it on that motherboard with no luck. I have a list of the configurations for the ~45 people in this thread who reported it and they all look different, even with a few people who said they had multiple similar systems and it only happened on one of them. That randomness has sort of led to the theory that the best approach in general is really just to try it on as many systems as possible. But you're right - that is the other board that was mentioned more than once .. who knows. I'll ask again to see if we have it, if not, will see if we can get it. Thanks for the reminder!

    After my last report have I been running v8.7, have exchanged my power supply to a larger to be sure lack of power was not a factor and switched one of my external drives from Firewire to USB connection, as I did see a relative large amount of errors in the event log for that drive.

     

    Yesterday evening did I install the v8.9 again and ran the system fine overnight (idle). Shut the system down in the morning and started it again here in the afternoon, after less than 30 min. did I have a lockup of the system when just browsing the Internet, the system did recover and in the Event log did a have several of this: "The driver detected a controller error on \Device\Harddisk0\DR0." it looks like VSS have started at the same time as this error happend as the following message also was to be found in the Event log: "The shadow copies of volume C: were aborted because of an IO failure on volume C:."

     

    When looking in the Matrix Storage Console was the ch0 drive reported to Generation 1 (downgraded on speed). This is a snapshot of the System Report before I did a reboot and switched to v8.8.

    I will need to go back now and check the ROM versions of the controllers of our motherboards (if I get a chance) but we have now tested the following motherboards, all of which have reported errors in the log after a short space of time. In every case we were running a Raid 0 array of two Intel X25-E SSD's. The OS we used was Vista Ultimate with all patches applied, Lavalys Everest Ultimate 5.00.1650 and NOTHING ELSE. We recreated the image after each test. There we NO OTHER PERIPHERALS attached to the systems at the time of the test. The longest we had to wait before the problems started was 55 minutes. The shortest occured at boot time. Everest Ultimate, using a disk suite benchmark we ran in batch mode, was run continously after boot. We ran 3 tests for each motherboard. There were no cases where the tests generated the error in the same timeframe for each motherboard. Needless to say, 8.9 was used in every case.

    Sure, I could go through and write BIOS versions, ROM versions etc etc but 2 of us have now spent a day on this and the boss has said we can spend no more time. (Particularly when we told him that all we had to do was go back to 8.8!!)

     

    In this morning's briefing (we are in Australia) we discovered that our Singapore Office had replaced 5 1TB Seagate drives (all part of Raid 1 Arrays) across a population of 27 machines over the past 3 months. Apparently Seagate in Singapore are monitoring the issue but so far have found nothing wrong with the drives.

     

    In Singapore and Australia we ONLY use ASUS motherboards. In Europe we have a mixture BUT we have been specifically told NOT to contact any other branches yet. Pointing the blame at ASUS for an Intel provided ICH9/10R chipset series is possible but, I believe, unlikely

     

    If the Intel System Engineer that is suposedly providing feedback in this forum is the genuine article, all I can say is that we have never found any Intel Engineer this friendly in the past. We report approx 3 issues a year to Intel and in most cases never even receive an acknowledgement, and if we do we are told that they couldn't generate the problem in house. In a previous entry I made the statement that Intel would never admit to a problem even if they could generate it in house. Years ago our mining engineers discovered a low level rounding error on an Intel processor. Intel denied the issue but sent out new processor chips at a different rev level "just in case". Needless to say, the problem went away.

     

    My boss told me that under no circumstances could I mention our Company's name or use our Company's email address so I am using my home address. In his words "the last thing I want is a bunch of Intel Reps crawling all over me". (which I doubt would happen

    Just found this thread yesterday, wish I had weeks ago. Unfortunately I've gone through the hassle of exchanging 3 different drives with Western Digital thinking my original drive failed and that they were in turn sending me defective drives as replacements.

     

    The IMSM has been reporting drives in two different slots (luckily at different times) as failed by the 8.9.x driver. I've just downgraded to 8.8.x and I'm rebuilding now. I'll try to post back in a few days to confirm that the driver downgrade worked. In my case, if the rebuild holds for 72 hours it should indicate the driver was in fact the issue.

    Hi, I have same problem only with Windows 7 (no problems until i was using Vista Ultimate 64bit). I hope that Intel or Microsoft will solve this big problem.

    I'm back with a twist.

     

    So I got my new board GA-P55-UD4 and as I said 8.8 will work just fine on the P55 chipset even those its not listed to support PCH.

     

    I since then had time to try 8.9 and yet again a drive failed...only this time it was not OS array with ST380811AS it was Port 3 listed in the console which is my storage array with ST3320620AS that never failed back with my old board only the OS array failed with 8.9 now it the other way round.

     

    I do know that some motherboard maker don't match up the port listings to Matrix storage console and it not like 0 (0-5 console)is 1 (1-6 board) neither its like port 1 in the console is port 3 on the board, but even so thats not a big problem really as you can just go with the serial numbers on the drive.

     

    I'm now back to 8.8 25% done 10 hours to go and see if it fails again.

     

    If this is not a driver problem I don't know what is.

    I've been following this thread for a while now, as I was interested in converting to using a raid 10 system, and I'd never set one up myself before (on a side note I was dissappointed to learn that the Intel storage manager only supports raid 0+1 and not 1+0, but with only 4 drives it doesn't make a huge difference, but still... ).  Anyhow, I decided to be brave or perhaps foolish and went ahead and installed Windows 7 x64 RTM (subscription) with the new Intel Storage Manager 8.9 drivers (theory being if something bad happened I'd know to simply downgrade to the 8.8 drivers).  I installed the OS/software on Monday, and I haven't had this problem yet.  Not to say I won't, as a lot of time hasn't passed yet, but I've kept the system on seeding/downloading torrents when I'm not working on it, so there's always some hard drive activity going on and I haven't experienced the problems discussed in this thread yet.

     

    I'll be sure to report back if the problem does occur, but for now I figured I'd post this report on the off chance this issue doesn't actually affect everybody.  I have to believe this is the case, otherwise Intel would have a much easier time reproducing the issue.

     

    I'm using a MSI P45 Platnium (it includes the 10R chipset), and four Samsung F1 1TB hard drives in raid 10.  Once I get more time I plan on rebuilding a couple of other systems to use raid 10 (and windows 7 with 8.9) as well.

    I'd like to chime in with my experience using MSM 8.9 and now 8.7. I found this thread while attempting to address the *numerous* problems I've had with stability of a new system build for Vista 64.

     

    After creating a raid1 configuration in the option rom I did a clean installation of Vista 64 SP1 with the 8.9 raid drivers. Once Vista was up I installed MSM 8.9. I suffered many system freezes while attempting perform Vista updates, SP2, and software. For me the system freezes were manifested as an inability to use the mouse or keyboard to regain control of the system; a hard reboot was always required. At first I assumed that the freezes were due to hardware. I've run memtest86, Prime 95, and Intel CPU Burn - none of these tools showed any issues nor did continuous reads or writes to the individual disks comprising the raid1 volume from Ubuntu showing anything.

     

    In no case did the system freezes result in any errors being written to the logs viewable from Vista's Event Monitor.

     

    After seeing this thread, this weekend I reinstalled Vista 64 again; this time with the 8.7 raid drivers and MSM 8.7. Unfortunately the system still freezes during many activities: wake up from sleep, windows updates, software installs, etc. It always seems to occur when heavy disk writes are occurring. The last freeze occured while I was restoring an iTunes library from optical media. As usual there was nothing reported in the logs. It has probably frozen 4 or 5 times in the past 36 hours.

     

    Reading through the experience of others and seeing that some people are experiencing stability with 8.7 or 8.8 I really have to wonder whether the issue lies with operating sytem/chipset driver/raid driver combination. My chipset drivers are Intel's 9.1.0.1007. My OS is currently Vista 64 SP2, with all current Important/Recommended updates applied.

    I saw the similar problem on DG965OT (BIOS v1754) when connecting MORE THEN SIX harddisks at once to the MB ports (6 SATA on ICH8R and 2 PATA on Marvell ). I did try AHCI mode. Two of the connected HDDs are not recognized by BIOS at boot time in most of boot attempts, so I'm sure that it's a bug in BIOS but not in driver. Unrecognized drives could be both SATA or SATA&PATA in random order. I had to install PCI or PCI-Ex PATA controller in order to move 7th and 8th HDDs on it and avoid the problem.

    I want to update my posting from yesterday with a potentially important configuration note:

     

    When I did my latest installation of Vista 64 with the 8.7 raid drivers and MSM 8.7 I did *not* initially enable volume write-back cache for the raid array in MSM. Hence all the system freezes I've experienced with 8.7 are in a configuration where volume write-back cache is *disabled*.

     

    As you can see from the MSM system report I posted, volume write-back is currently enabled: I enabled that feature after the last system freeze. I will post back in a few days to let readers know whether 8.7 appears stable with volume write-back cache enabled. (Or I'll post sooner if it's not stable!)

     

    I do wonder what the interplay is between Window's Device Manager/Disk Drive Properties/Policy settings for "Enabling Advanced Performance" and MSM's settings for volume write-back cache. That  property setting is currently unchecked in the properties for my raid array.

    Well my system has frozen twice tonight with 8.7. The first time it froze tonight was after moving some music from CD to iTunes. It froze after the CD was ejected and while an iPod was syncing. The second time it froze tonight was after I opened/closed the DVD burner drawer when checking to see if the CD was still in the drive. As usual no errors were reported in the logs. Anyone have suggestions on how to diagnose this issue further?

    Hi All,

     

    I wanted to add my comments to the discussion. I have a Gigabyte GA-X48T-DQ4 motherboard and 5 Samsung F1 1TB drives connected to the Intel ICH9R controller in a RAID 5 configuration. I am using Microsoft Server 2008 R2 and version 8.9.1023 of the Intel Storage Manager.

     

    I am seeing a failed drive, degraded array or a requirement for verification every 3 to 4 days currently with this setup. At first I thought I had a drive overheating problem, but I have checked the air flow and drive temperature and these are fine. My original view before seeing this thread was that there was a slight incompatibility between the Intel drivers and R2, but this does not seem to be the case.

     

    The actual drive that fails is random, and to rectify the issue I just right click on the drive to mark it as okay and the array is then rebuilt, this takes about 3 days to complete.

     

    The drives host a lot of data, about 3.8 TB, of which some of it is Hyper-V virtual machines. The system seems to be unable to shutdown cleanly as more often than not, the drives also go into a rebuild state when the server is rebooted - this machine is on 24x7, this may be linked to the suggestion that the issue is related to the cache settings.
