Windows 7 RC - Intel GMA965 - Aero flickers

Hello,

I have been using Windows 7 since the first Beta. I have this annoying problem, that sometimes the taskbar and the window title starts flickering. Especially when I use firefox, or play a 3D game in a window with many other windows on the desktop.

Now I updated the video driver to WDM 1.1 prerelease, but the problem is still there.

Here are some videos:

Details:

Display adapter: Mobile Intel(R) 965 Express Chipset Family (Microsoft Corporation - Prerelease WDDM 1.1)

Windows 7 Build 7100

Dell Latitude D630

Please help me with that.

How can I fix this?

Henko

I have added some details.

Having the same problem on a Dell Inspiron 1525. Seems to be the worst when using Firefox similar to what henko mentioned. Updating to prerelease drivers didn't solve the issue, and also caused "icon" and "wallpaper" ghosting on my desktop.

Same problem here. ASUS P5E-VM HDMI w/Intel G35 chipset and integrated video. I notice it using IE 8.0.

Same here also it resizes the window of any game I play so there black bars on the sides and theres no intel panel in the task bar so i cant change it. I just reinstalled the old vista drivers, I hope they fix the windows 7 drivers though.

Currently I'm using Windows 7 Build 7127 with the newest Intel WDM 1.1 prerelease drivers that I've got from windows update:

Driver date: 2009.05.06.

Driver version: 8.15.10.1749

The flickering seems to be gone. Both with firefox and with 3d games.

However I'm testing it yet, but I haven't noticed flickering for a couple of weeks.

I don't know if this was the driver or windows, but either way, thanks for it!

Intel does not have production drivers for their graphics controllers and Windows 7, I believe they will be posted once Microsoft releases their operating system as production version.

Dunno if you got it pinned down yet, but here's what I did to get the flicker fixed on my laptop. It's not perfect but it drastically cuts the flicker/refreshing problem. It's a real boar to pin down, but you can expirement with the settings to get what works for you. Hope it helps!

(For those that don't trust the link, use the Intel control panel to modify the 3D settings, the settings I used are in the link, but you can expirement with them to see what works and what does not.)

I think it's an OpenGL issue that causes all these Aero glitches.

Hecko-

Good job. Just for you all to know. If your screen is flickering upon installation of an OS or just in general. It is due to the Refresh Rate being too low! With the 3D Graphics the refresh rate is higher. Any other addition to the display settings change probably was recommended also. I've been seeing so many threads still stuck in Limbo!

It was not installation, but actually Using it. Nothing to do with the refresh rate. It was a driver bug, and already got fixed.

Doh! Are you serious? Read my comment over, however, read it slowly and try monotoned(this usually cures any misunderstanding of the writers "meaning" of his/her comment which is mainly the effect when a reader uses "emphasis" on a sentence not originating from his/her mouth in an incorrect manner.

Clearification: You had not experienced any "flickering" of the screen previous to installing Windows 7 operating system on your pc? Upon the completion or shortly there after you noticed the screen would flicker? Would you or would you not suspect the problem originated from the action of installation?

Secondly, I would like to bring your attention to the true meaning of "driver bug". The OS and any program which executes on a pc/mac/etc. was created by ideas of many but constructed by a programmer. The programmer(s) may error or overlook, he is only human, an element needed to declare the program fully functional. It is not a virus, nor a worm(parasite)? Trojan Horse? It is a relatively harmless thing which is annoying, annoying just so happens to be a definition of word "bug". If this element so happens to relate to, using the comment in question, "refresh rates" in a general collection of settings. Would that be ruled out of the actual cause of the flicker?

Hardware: HP dc7700, Intel Q965, Core2Duo 6400 @2.13 GHz, 4Gb RAM, 500Gb HDD

OS: Windows 7 Enterprise* , (6.1.7600) 64bit

Driver Version: 8.15.10.1825

Driver Date: 16.06.2009

Random square parts of screen are starting to blink with transparent colors, flicker usually gone if move mouse cursor over the flicker, or switch window.

This driver is the latest available, and is offered both by Intel and Microsoft Update. So problem is still not solved.

As an workaround, turned off all graphics effects, still testing, not experiencing flickers yet in this configuration.

Well, yesterday I have experienced the problem again, so yes, you are right. It isn't solved yet.

Tested turning offf visual effects (System->Additional Parameters -> Performance) for some time. Fortunately, this solves the problem - no more flickers, but visual performance of W7 is significantly degraded and I feel that some operation using 3D acceleration, like some Flash code embedded in the web pages, is somehow affected. But, I could be wrong with it - didn't catch the pattern yet.

Waiting for W7 release and Intel promised to release supported drivers instead of the reference ones we're still using.

Sorry if I seemed kind of harsh! I recently got W7 on my laptop. Are you all on desktops or laptops(might be a stupid ? being, I believe, this is a mobile chipset)? Have you all tried to change your refresh rates? The 3D thing didn't do a damn thing to mine. I have this set up in my laptop: Core2 Duo edition of Inspiron 1525 with mobile 965 chipset. I have yet to experience the problem you all are talking about. When I responded the first time I had not yet put it on my computer. I believe by second post I had it runnin. If there is anything I can let you all know I will surely post up what you all would like to know, my W7 is working wonderfully! No issues, nothing. There was no driver difference for W7.

One suggestion. Go into system update and update ALL of your drivers.... I believe for you more experienced(which may be all of you) in your device manager. I did that before I thought of putting W7 on here, could be a reason or not.

im4u2h8, I think you should dig technical details or at least, READ and UNDERSTAND posts other people do, BEFORE posting such kind of marvelous 'solutions'.

1. Refresh rate have nothing common with the problem.

2. If you'd gratefully take a moment to read other posts, you'd find that the driver is the latest available and Intel delays updates until W7 will be officially released (October 22nd).

3. Intel 965 line of chipsets consists both of mobile and desktop line.

4. If you'd ever look into hardware description I've posted, you'd find that it's desktop.

Sassy one today aren't we. Oh goody, Kenya.RU can count! Thanks for the lesson Kenya.RU, I am glad to know you have time on your hands. Unfortunately, not all of us can be like you!

I recieve emails from responses, that is about as much attention I can spare. Seeing as though I was initially responding to Henko's post, I was more concerned with what he had to say. As a matter of fact I do know 965 comes in Mobile and Desktop, but was rushed to get the post up, so it slipped my mind if "GMA" was designated as a Mobile or if it was a general chipset. Tomorrow I will aspire to be more like you! For now I will stick to being myself thank you very much!

The only time I have ever heard of flickering to be any thing other than associated with refresh rates is..... Never! If you do not need another's help in figuring this out, then please feel free to educate us all on what it is that is causing this to happen or you could always choose to ignore comments that are not of your liking. If you are awaiting on the new win 7 drivers to cure your issue than patience would be a virtue, and complaining would be taboo. Since I have not experienced this "flickering" I was simply offering a comparison in systems, software and settings.

Is there anything else I can help you with today Sir Kenya.RU?
