Having been a sysadmin myself for several years vPro is the stuff that dreams are made of:

  • I can limit my user in such a way that he cannot cause any damage to other users around him by setting strict network filters and even use heuristics to protect the network from viruses. The agent presence checking feature ensures that he does not disable anti-virus and firewall agents.
  • By using the remote boot functionality I can actually turn off all systems at night, without having to worry about them not getting patched, as I can conveniently wake them up whenever I want to. This does not only save power and with that money, but also ensure that systems across the whole estate get patched.
  • Using the IDE-redirect and serial over LAN feature I can remotely change BIOS settings and even reinstall an OS if necessary.

I am sure there are many more use cases that I did not think of so far, help me out:

What other advanced use-cases can you think of?

The simplicity of inventory is much easier with vPro technology as well (and more complete!). All you need is power and a network connection!

I used to run a group who monitored/managed over 900 PC's and I would have LOVED to have something as simple as online/offline inventory control. Knowing what CPU speeds you're running, or how much memory in a system makes a BIG difference when you're looking to upgrade or refit a solution for customers. Many times, customers turn off PC's to save on energy usage, and with vPro technology you can STILL see the system down the wire even when it's powered off. What a time saver!
