I work at Intel, and this is my personal blog on this site. which will discuss my point of view on social media, and Intel's emerging work in this area.

Good for us... pats on the back all around as we launch Open Port. We've taken a couple of steps in the right direction. But we need to go father. The way I see it we hit 2 of three critical steps that are needed for us to shift from traditional web publishing to web2.0.

  1. We shifted from a focus on managing assets to managing people. We now focus on getting subject matter experts to blog and moderate, over managing the deliver of white papers and case studies.
  2. We shifted the technology from a single monolithic enterprise architecture, to a more open lightweight external web architecture.
  3. But we are missing the 3rd key ingredient, which is an outward focus.

This site as it launches is pretty significant but I see the content and the topics still very inwardly focused. Even as we bring in users to add their own views and content, I believe this site can only be successful and really connect with the audience if Intel's voice starts to shift beyond the perspective within the corporate walls and outward to the discussions and interests of the community.

To do this we need to look outward to the discussions, conversations, and topics that are relevant to our customers. Outward in terms of participating, commenting and responding to dialogues wherever they occur.

Don’t get me wrong. I believe in this site and I believe that it has a purpose on Intel.com as a central place to host conversations with all parties interested in a dialogue around our products and technologies. By shifting to an outward focus I do not mean we shut down and go to other sites. I think we can have a central destinations for communities and social media on intel.com AND be outwardly focused in our dialogue and participation.

...onward and outward!
