I am trying to assemble a new desktop computer. Before start assembly, it is extremely necessary to identify the motherboard which is compatible with the desired Intel processor. Once I go through the Intel's Classic series motherboards, there were so many compatible processors (with many Bus speeds) listed. For an example, Intel DG41MJ desktop board is compatible with 24 Intel Core 2Duo processors with number of bus speeds such as: 1333 MHz, 1066 MHz & 800 MHz. Honestly I was confused by viewing this . There should be at least one or two 100% compatible processors out of those 24…..?? Am I rite???
I red some articles regarding FSB (Front Side Bus). According to one of the articles published in Wikipedia, the FSB is the data path that links the processor & the "Northbridge". The Northbridge has all the connectivity with Graphics & memory (RAM). Therefore they state the Memory Bus & the Front Side Busshould share the same speed. As a result unnecessary bottlenecks could be eliminated & over all system's performance would be increased. By considering above factors, what I could decide is the processor that has the exact frequency of the Memory Bus as the option. For ease of understanding I would take the above example (Intel DG41MJ desktop board). From the list of 24 compatible Core2Duo processors, what I could decide is the processors which have 800 MHz Bus speed (Ex: E4700 Processor).The reason is, the Intel DG41MJ desktop board supports DDR2 SDRAM with 800MHz Memory Bus.
I do not know whether I am wrong….. Please explain this to me.I strongly welcome yourvaluable corrections & suggestions……
Someone that overclocks could answer this better but I wouldn't be concerned. RAM speeds periodically encounter manufacturing hurdles that don't match the capabilities of other components. Intel seems to compensate for the mismatch very well. Changing a processor of 1066 FSB with a newer 1333 FSB CPU hasn't affected me so far with 800 MHz RAM. Presumably mismatches are dealt with using virtual memory (hard disk) so performance would suffer when multitasking or using demanding applications. Newer applications that can use, or have features that require, the newer CPU instruction sets are another issue. That means that a perfect computer with the proper amount and speed of RAM will always be outdated by any newer software you require.
I'm upgrading my x38 chipset boxes to core 2 quad. That leaves the processors that were there, both 1333 MHz FSB. The boxes I want to move them into are Q965 chipset. One of the procs is an E6750. Q965 will support an E6700 (1033 FSB). Memory is 800MHz. While I don't expect the overall speed to be the same, if it works at all, it'll be a big plus (over a 3.4GHz Pentium D). The only question is: will it work?
