the only firmware 82576 has is the boot agent.

try updating the chip's boot agent.

If the documentation for that product is correct, it only updates the FLASH NVM for network boots which we aren't using at all.
The Errata #30 indicates there is a version 1.9 of the EEPROM firmware that has a 50/50 chance of fixing the problem we are seeing. I am using FLASH and EEPROM in the context of the chip documentation, not loosely.
if you go to downloadcenter.intel.com, then enter 82576. you'll get a result says the 'ibabuild' file is a firmware, see this. updating the boot agent also updates the eeprom.
