A server of ours recently blue screened. The dump indicated it might be something with our intel nic driver and/or hardware and some 3rd party replication software. We updated the driver via Windows Update. Does anyone know where I can find the release notes for the NIC driver versions to see if there was a problem potentially fixed? I've looked everywhere and it looks like intel does not provide this for this adapter. Maybe I am missing something?

Thank you!
Have you tried downloading the latest drivers directly form Intel?
http://downloadcenter.intel.com/Default.aspx
I believe the NIC you are referring to uses the Intel® 82571GB Gigabit Controller, which has newer drivers.
The release notes are included as part of the software downloads in Download Center. If you update the adapter using Windows update, your adapter driver might be out of sync with the other software components if you have Intel(R) PROSet and advanced network services (ANS) for teaming and VLANs installed. Upgrading your drivers using the software packages in Download Center will keep all the versions syncronized and prevent any number of issues.
The version 15.4.1 software packages will be available in Download Center next week, which will include updated versions of Intel(R) PROSet and ANS. I do not know of a specific blue screen fix in the latest software, but if your adapter drivers and software versions are mismatched that could cause a blue screen. If you have the bandwidth and want the new software now, you can download a zip file of the version 15.4.1 CD.
If the upgrade does not resolve the blue screen issue, then I recommend contacting support.
Patrick, thanks for response! I'll try updating the driver via that method over the weekend and see if I can find the release notes. I'll update this discusson on Monday with the results.
Mark, As far as I can tell, we don't have those software components installed. I'll try updating via Download Center over the weekend and update this discussion with the results.
Thanks!
Michael
Patrick, I tried updating the drivers through the intel download site and a mirror of this server that still had the old version. I ended up downloading and running ProWin32.exe from http://downloadcenter.intel.com/Detail_Desc.aspx?agr=Y&DwnldID=18719. However, it will not run as it displays this error message: "The installed version of Intel PROSet is not supported for upgrades. You must uninstall it before installing this version".
However, I do not see anything called Intel PROSet in Add/Remove programs, the start menu, program files directory, or device manager. I do see the nic's in device manager. Any ideas?
Mark/anyone,
See my post to Patrick about not being able to install the updated driver because of the ""The installed version of Intel PROSet is not supported for upgrades. You must uninstall it before installing this version"" error message. I cannot even see where Intel PROSet is installed on the computer. I would like to avoid completely removing everything to do with the NIC from the system as I would like to preserve all of the settings.
Anyone have any ideas or run into this before?
The program should be listed in device manager as Intel(R) Network Connections ... . Intel(R) PROSet is part of the network connections.
How do I save and restore adapter and team configuration settings? gives directions on saving your adapter configuration before you uninstall the software.
Hello Mark,
Thank you for the reply! Unfortunately I don't see that anywhere in device manager (nor in Add/Remove Programs). The only thing I see are Intel PRO/1000 PT Quad Port LP Server Adapters listed. The only other items in Device Manager that start with Intel are the processors (CPU's), and an Intel 82801 PCI Bridge.
Maybe it was never installed correctly in the first place?
Screenshot of the Network Adapters:
may be the bits and pieces of the previously installed proset software, resulted from the blue screen, is preventing you to update to new version.
or the phantom adapters from your previous team. check this out.
Phantom adapters may prevent your adapter from teaming
there's used to be a proset uninstall utility to clean up broken proset in a system. but can't seem to find one for gigabit pt quad adapter.
Another place you can look for help is Unable to uninstall network adapter drivers and/or teams. I agree that something in the registry makes the software think that an old version of the software is already installed. Hopefully, the items on this page will help you clear things up.
Okay I'm connivced. Let's put it to action.
That addresses several of my concerns acutally.
