The RAID Web Console 2 was able to tell me one of the drives in my RAID 5 was being rebuild and that the array was degraded. For some reason the rebuild did not seem to be progressing. The time to completion kept getting longer and longer. I did notice that the drive had 254 media errors, but otherwise seemed fine. Finally I replaced the drive with a standby drive and things seem to be progressing now, but very slowly. In 20 hours it has only done 10%. Is it normal for a rebuild to take so long?
It depends on the number and size of your hard drive, as well as Rebuild Rate setting on your controller.
I have five 2 TB drives in RAID 5. The disk has been rebuilding for 6 days now and it's 69% finished. The progress of rebuilding seems to have increased the last few days. Is that what you would consider normal?
I cannot see any Rebuild Rate option via the RAID Web Console 2 application.
First please check your driver version. Latest driver can be found here.
To change rebuild rate, right click the controller in RWC2, and select "Set Adjustable Task Rates".
Accorrding to Windows Device Manager my driver version is 6.1.7600.16385 dated 2006-06-21
According to the web site the latest version of the driver is 13.16.0308.2010 dated 2010-05-01
Since I boot from my RAID volume I'm wondering if it is safe to update the driver while the system is running.
Yes follow the Readme file to update the driver.
I tried updating the driver from the "Driver" tab in the "Intel MegaSR SCSI Disk Device Properties" window, but Windows just reports "The best driver softwre for your device is already installed. Windows has determined the driver software for your device is up to date."
If I click the "Unistall" button (per the directions in the readme file) Windows says "Warning: You are about to uninstall this device from your system." That's a pretty scary message given this is the device the system is running from. I can't help feeling like something really bad is about to happen.
The drive is 81% complete rebuilding. I think I will wait until it completes before trying anything more drastic.
By the way what exactly does "Unrecoverable medium error during rebuild" mean?
Does it mean that there was a bad sector that was remapped via the drive's spare sector table, or that the drive's spare sector table is full and these are unrecoverable sector errors?
Three of my drives have these kinds of error, while the other three drives have none. I'm wondering if I need to replace these drives.
Please try the following steps to update your driver:
1. Double click the controller in Device Manager. Select the Drier Page, click Update Driver to install the new driver
2. Click the 'Browse My computer for driver software' button
3. Click the 'Browse' button to specify the driver location. In your case, the driver should be located in folder "win7-2k8r2-x64_v.13.16.0308.2010"
4. Click the 'Next' button then system will serach driver in the specified location and install the driver automatically
5. Click the 'Close' button to complete the driver installation
6. Restart the PC
After updating the driver, if you still get "Unrecoverable medium error" message, you may consider getting the drives replaced. What's the brand/model of your hard drive?
That is exactly what I did - but Windows reports that it is already using the most up-to-date driver and does not complete the upgrade.
I had many more "Unrecoverable Medium Errors" over night, and one new error "Bad block table is full; unable to log block PD 0:5 block =0xce4af636" so the rebuild stopped. I've ordered a replacement drive.
I am using the Western Digital WD2002FYPS. I bought 6 of these drives a year ago. One of them was dead on arrival and I had to return it for a replacement.
That is weird - can you install and run SIT and post the results here?
