D-link DIR655 router. Intel 5100 in a Dell Studio 17 lap top running Vista 64. The router is set up to run a/b/g/n but adapter will not run any faster than 54 Mbps. If I set the router for "N only" the 5100 will not connect (as expected given the 54 Mbps). I worked with D-Link support, and after going through gyrations and setup, said the problem is with the network adapter. Dell support could not identify the problem and told me to update the router's firmware which was up to date. The device driver version for the adapter is 12.0.0.78 and Windows says it is up to date.
One interesting point: When I go to the 5100 "device manager" - advance tab - wireless mode, option 6. is 802.11a/b/g. "n" is not included in any of the options. Does enabling the "820.11n" Mode override this setting? The mode for the router is "mixed a/b/g/n." This is the only glaring issue that I have found with either the router or the adapter and suspect this is where the problem is.
are you sure you have a version that support N? Not all Wifi Link 5100 Cards support it. Some only work as ABG I would check with your manufacturer to make sure you have the correct N version.

It is an Intel 5100 Wireless-N (1x2) half mini-card. The spec says it is IEEE 802.11a/b/g/Draft-N1 compliant. Furthermore, the device manager advance tab lists 802.11n mode. But you make a good point. I will check with Intel support.
You can check which 5100 adapter you actually have by poping the cover over your NIC and reading the lable, or with the Intel Wireless Lan ID Utility http://downloadcenter.intel.com/detail_desc.aspx?Agr=Y&DwnldID=8061&ProductID=1784
Also, on these cards, Draft-N speeds are only obtained with WPA2-AES security. http://www.intel.com/support/wireless/wlan/sb/CS-025393.htm

Tried running the utility to confirm the adapter type and ran into an error. Security is set at wpa2-personal AES Other choice is wpa2-enterprise. Router set to wpa-wpa2 auto but same result when changed to wpa2 only.
The card is a 512AN-HMW; D p/n OCY256.
I will not connect if router is set to "N" only.
I realize the easiest way to solve the problem is to lug the computer to a cyber cafe which is a "N" hot spot but frankly the problem should not be that difficult. As usual D-Link support blames the adapter, Dell support says it is the router (they did not supply) and I am waiting for Intel to get back to me (I escalated after reading the suggested docs with no change in the result).
Security is set to WPA2-PERS AES for the card per the documentation and WAP/WPA2 AES on the router (required because 2 other lap tops with g cards will connect on WPA but not WPA2).
Have you tried to connect with security temporarily turned off to eliminate that variable?
It didn't like that little technique at all. Wouldn't even connect.
BTW, running at 1 Gbps in LAN.
if you have Intel WiFi 5100 AGN and enable security WPA2-PSK AES and not running in N mode only max 54Mbps !!!! enable QoS on your router configuration

I enabled QoS and it is working now! (with WRT320N), who knew? Thanks
Things like this need to be spelled out both in the router and adapter docs.
I've had a similar issue. Using the Intel 5100 (512AN_HMW) and the DIR-655. What did the trick for me was to enable WMM in the Advanced Wireless router configuration.
Log in DIR-655 administration, go to ADVANCED -> ADVANCED WIRELESS -> WMM Enabled. Check this box.
I'm having the same issue with Intel WiFi 1000 BGN and D-Link DIR-655... so the fix is for you guys was enabling WPA2/AES or enabling QoS or enabling WMM or a combonation of two these or all of them?
In my case, the only thing that fixed the issue was to enable WPA2/AES + WMM. It would work with or without QoS, although I recommend enabling it since it probably doesn't hurt.
Enabling AES is the thing to do, as I already read on other forums. So far, I don´t know how. I got a ThinkPad SL510 with a Intel WiFi Link 1000 running Windows 7 Home Premium and a D-Link DIR-615 router. I can enable it in the router settings, but I can´t figure out a way to enbale it at the client. There is a error diagnosis program from Lenovo, that say, the adapter uses TKIP, but no hint how to change it. I already switched all options in the device manager I found, but no trace of AES setting. I also installed Intel PROSet/Wireless, with the result, that I got no connection at all.
Somebody got a hint?
Re: D-Link setup and 802.11n connection using WMM option enabled...
This is the only solution that worked for me. Thanks a lot for your feedback!
