PXE-E61 Boot Failure DG31DL

I'm doing my first bare-bones installation.  I cannot load my operating system until I get this resolved.  Elsewhere on this website, the advice was centered around ALL of the following to be true:

  • Boot to LAN is enabled in BIOS setup
  • Network cable/connection is not present
  • Network boot is in boot order before a present boot device

The advice was to remove the "boot to LAN" from the list of boot devices in the BIOS setup.  Well, I went to the BIOS setup and found "boot to network" and disabled it.  It didn't work, so I restored that setting back to "ENABLE".  I THEN realized that this advice was for the DG31GL board.  My DG31DL isn't listed.

I contacted Tiger-Direct technical support.  The technician told me that I must set the serial ATA to IDE mode.  I can't find these setting in the BIOS screens.

I installed only two drives:  A hard disk and a DVD drive.  The hard disk is wired to the SATA0 plug, and the DVD drive is wired to the IDE0 plug.  The DVD drive doesn't accept the SATA plug.  It is using the older 4-pin power plug.  The jumper on it is set to MASTER.

All power connections are made.

In by BIOS setup the boot sequence (drives) is DVD first, hard disk second.

If it helps, my BIOS version is GLG3110H.86A.0004.2008.0318.2223

What am I doing wrong?  Is my motherboard defective?

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Re: PXE-E61 Boot Failure DG31DL

Hello there,

Firstly, check the AA number of the Board:
If the AA number is something E33911 - xxx, then this board is the Intel® Desktop Board DG31GL
Check on the website:Page 5/6
http://download.intel.com/support/motherboards/desktop/dg31gl/sb/e4188802us.pdf

Now second thing to do is to update the BIOS:
I always adopt the method Recovery Option.

Try a bios recovery using a formatted USB media.

Instructions for Recovery BIOS Updates

1. Copy the recovery file (*.bio) to a FAT formatted usb disk.
http://downloadcenter.intel.com/T8Clearance.aspx?sType=&agr=&ProductID=2966&DwnldID=17716&url=/17716/eng/GL0009.BIO&PrdMap=&strOSs=&OSFullName=&lang=eng

2. Place the usb disk in the target system.
3. Shut down the system and unplug AC power. Disconnect the hard drive and cd rom drive as well.
4. Open the chassis and remove the BIOS Configuration Jumper. See the Technical Product Specification for details including the location of this jumper.
5. Power the system on.
6. Wait 2-5 minutes for the update to complete. When the usb drive LED is lit, the system is copying the recovery code into the FLASH device.
7. System will either turn off when the recovery process is completed or it will prompt you to turn off the system.
8. Remove usb disk
9. Replace the BIOS Configuration Jumper.
10. Restart system.

Note: these can be found on:
Website: http://downloadmirror.intel.com/17197/eng/BIOS%20Update%20Readme.pdf
Page 3

Connect the hard drive to the SATA Port 0
Connect the Optical Drive to the IDE.

Thirdly,
Go into the bios.
Check if the new bios has been applied correctly.
GLG3110H.86A.0009

Go to Boot Menu
Boot Menu Type: Advance
Boot Drive Order: CD ROM first, Then SATA Drive
Boot to Optical Devices: Enable
Boot to Removable Devices: Disable
Boot to Network: Disable
USB Boot: Disable
Boot to USB First: Disable

Go to Advanced:
Drive Configuration
Configure SATA as IDE
SMART: Enable
Save and Exit.

Insert the OS CD and boot on the CD. Install your OS.
Install all the drivers from the website in the following order (chipset, graphics, audio, lan, management engine)

All the best,

Regards,
Aryan.

Re: PXE-E61 Boot Failure DG31DL

Hi,

First of all, please confirm your motherboard model cause with G31 chipset, we have two desktop boards namely:

I do not see any motherboard DG31DL or not that I know of manufactured by Intel. Besides, any motherboard with G31 chipset, be it GL or PR will have common set of drivers/updates and the troubleshooting would almost be the same.

Secondly, the proc as explained for DG31GL is applied here rightly so.

From what I have been able to comprehend, your HDD is SATA based while the DVD-ROM is IDE and and you end up getting PXE-E61 Boot Failure message on the screen when you try to boot and install OS on your PC. PXE boot means network boot where a PC tries to boot from an OS image placed over the LAN which is not your case so in anyway, you will have to disable PXE Boot unless it is required in future.

If your PC is unable to detect your HDD, please ensure from BIOS that your SATA ports are enabled.

As for configuring SATA to IDE, do you see some option as Configure as Parallel ATA in the BIOS?

Check your boot order from BIOS and change it accordingly:

  1. First Boot: DVD
  2. Second Boot: HDD

The rest you can choose in whatever way you want to.

I hope this resolves your problem, if not, feel free to contact us and we'll be glad to help

Thank you, have a great day!

Re: PXE-E61 Boot Failure DG31DL

Hi there,

I guess that your optical drive is not working. Why are you getting the PXE boot error? This is because it cannot find any boot device, so the last priority will be Intel Boot Agent.

I think that you will need to try another optical drive as a test. Try a SATA one if possible.

You can also try the Optical Drive on another machine as a test.

Another way to test the CD Drive:

- Burn the Recovery BIO file on a blank CD.

- Disconnect all other media device like usb, hard drive.

- Leave only the optical drive connected.

- And follow the same procedure for BIOS recovery except now you are using a CD.

- In theory, if the drive and the CD are ok, it should be done automatically.

How BIOS Recovery works?

Once the bios jumper is removed, it looks for a media that contains the bio file.

If found, it will execute the bios recovery.

It does not look for specific device like usb, hard disk, optical drive

It just searches on the media that contains the bio file.

Let us know how it goes. Best thing to do is to use another Optical Drive.

All the best,

Regards,

Aryan

Re: PXE-E61 Boot Failure DG31DL

Hi Vibsr,

One more thing is to try a CMOS by removing the battery for 10 -15 minutes.

Disconnect the AC Power.

See if it makes any differences.

Make sure to set the bios settings again as before.

All the best,

Regards,

Aryan

Re: PXE-E61 Boot Failure DG31DL

Hi there,

At least now i can see the optical drive in the boot order.

Did you try another bootable CD on the system?

The only way to know where the problem is by cross testing.

- Try another botable OS CD

  Result:

- Create a DOS bootable CD and try to boot on it. Many software allows to make a dos boot cd.

  Result:

- Try another Optical Drive

  Result:

- Create a DOS Bootable USB - using this tool

  Try to boot on it

  Result:

If it boots fine on the USB, i dont know why it is not boting on the optical drive.

All the best,

Regards,

Aryan
